Monday Musings 7/2

Hello, July.  The month that stands between me and August, which is the month for Alaska.  June 30th was fiscal year-end, and July is all about compiling those quarterly financial reports for our grant sponsors.  Thankfully I don't have any final reports due this month.  Hopefully this week will be calm since we're waiting on month-end close.  We have a holiday on Wednesday, and I'm taking Thursday afternoon off to get my stitches out.  Yes, it's been almost 3 weeks since my gum graft, and whatever stitches are left will be removed.  I'm pretty sure the dissolving stitches aren't there anymore.

That Friday feeling
Did anyone see the medals Run Disney released for Disneyland Paris?  This is why I keep coming back to Disney.  Each year I get medal envy, so I hatched my Disney plan for Princess next year.

I started looking at wireless headphones since my Yurbuds went kaput, and I'm not sure I'm ready to spend that much money on headphones.  I've looked at Bose, Jay Runs, and the same company that has Yurbuds, and the complaints are the same.  If the sound goes out, it's not $40 or $50 to replace, it's $150+.  What to do?  I'm currently using the buds that came with my iPod, and those aren't ideal.  They're getting the job done, but they aren't super comfortable either.  It would be nice to not have to deal with that cord.  It was flapping around a little bit on my Saturday run.

I did do some shopping Saturday, for a couple more short sleeve running shirts.  Since I don't have to use my treadmill for hills this time around, I can do more of my runs outside.  That means I need a couple more short sleeve shirts to protect my shoulders.  One thing I noticed is the trend seems to be going towards crew necks right now.  I much prefer v-necks for comfort around my throat, and I did find a UA one, so I ordered it.  The other is a Saucony crew neck, and I figured it was on sale, so worth a try.

I also did some shopping Sunday.  Some flowers my mom and I got weren't doing well at all, so I got some replacement flowers and planted them in the big pot.  They surround a zinnia as a filler in the "thriller, filler, spiller" theme.  They're very pretty, and I hope they take hold.  I also bought a 10-lb kettlebell since I'd been wanting one for the past few months.  Now I need to find exercises for it.

Around all of this, I got my run done on Saturday, and I did Pure Barre Sunday morning.  Holy crap!  I hadn't done that workout in a while, and my glutes were shaking when I was standing and my quads protested when I went up my stairs.  My arms are rather noodle-y too.  I know I need to get back to upper body work since my arms and torso are tired from my cardio.  Gotta get everything back before training starts!

Linking up with Holly and Wendy for Weekend Wrap-up.

  1. I am no green thumb to begin with and my flowers are really not happy with this heat!

    1. The heat is rough, and I'm watering my plants every day.

  2. You'll have to post an after photo of your flower pot! I haven't seen the crew-neck tops. I wouldn't want anything that high up around my neck in this heat though. I'm on my third (?) set of Yurbuds. I like the way they stay in place. And to go wireless, I'd have to run with my phone. Nope. Thanks for linking!

    1. I'm looking forward to the headphones I ordered. It says Bluetooth, and my iPod has Bluetooth.

  3. I really like my After Shokz bone conducting earphones--they let in ambient noise, which keeps me "safe". I've had them for over a year. I think they would be worth the investment.

  4. UGh...I detest crew neck tops...for running and regular fashion. I always opt for a scoop neck or a V neck if I have options. Glad your mouth is feeling good from the graft surgery!

    1. It's funny. I tested the shirts when they came, and I like the crew neck one more. It's not high up so it doesn't irritate me.

  5. I have a pair of Samsung wireless ear buds and I though I like the idea of them, the volume isn't the greatest and every now and then they randomly shut off. I probably have a setting on them I don't know how to fix. I am not tech savy at all! I have heard of the Jay Bird ones are really nice, but kind of on the bigger side.

    1. I definitely did a lot of research on the wireless ones.

  6. Have you looked into Aftershokz yet? I absolutely love my pair. I've had them since Christmas 2016 and the sound quality is just as great today as when I first opened the package.

    1. Good to know. I sprung for a pair and am looking forward to testing them out.

  7. I'm with you on the earbuds - sticking with my Yurbuds but annoyed by the cord but not ready to take the plunge. I wear v-necks for running -- mostly race shirts. I have a few crews that aren't too tight around the neck.

    1. I've been threading the cord behind my race bibs so it stays in place. Gotta look good for the pictures.

  8. It's definitely hard to find the right type of affordable wireless headphones. I've been using my Plantronics BackBeat FIT Wireless Sport Headphones for about 3 years and haven't had any issues yet (knock on wood). They are currently on sale at Best Buy for $90!

  9. I'm so glad I don't use headphones for running any more as it was such a pain, I was forever breaking the wire or getting cross with it flapping around. Of course now I have to buy new work headphones which is just as stressful (I'm a transcriptionist as part of my work). Well done on your barre class, sounds intense but very good for your running, right? I hope so, anyway!

    1. I have to be careful with the wires because my cat loves to chew them. Give her less than a minute, and she'll chew through it!

  10. Wow, sounds like a really productive week! These are the wireless headphones I've been using. They're not the best but they do the job well. And they're not expensive, which is pretty much one of the main things I was looking for. https://www.amazon.com/Avantree-Bluetooth-Headphones-Sweatproof-Earphones/dp/B01CNKOCWQ

    1. My concern is always replacing them. How long will they last? I'm certainly not happy that the Yurbuds I bought in November crapped out before my race in May.

  11. I've been really concentrating on weighted workouts, so it's been a while since I've done any barre-type workout -- but they always leave me sore, too -- I just feel my body responds to more heavy weights (but not super heavy -- no crossfit, thank you!).

    1. I do a good combo. Some days it's weights, some days it's Barre. I'm not into crossfit either.

  12. I was going to get wireless headphones last year but couldnt find any I liked. The Aftershokz ones seemed like they were too big. I have a cheap pair but they slide off my ears when I start sweating.

    1. That's never good with headphones! I don't know if my ears sweat, but my hairline does.

I use Aftershozk headphones and I really love them. I have a review on my blog under product reviews of them.

  14. I love Aftershokz. They're not the cheapest but they last forever. Plus I'm avoiding icky swimmers' ear from sweat & headphones
Yes on the crewneck. Better for sunburn on chest but ugh, way too close to the neck

    1. The crewneck I ordered is actually great. the fabric is so light, and the crewneck isn't close to my neck either.
