Monday Musings 2/12

Happy Monday.  We got snow on Saturday, after fog on Friday, so my weekend was a bit lazy.  I did do 5k on my treadmill, and then strength training and biking on Sunday.  I had all 3 family cats this weekend, so we all took it easy on Saturday.  I ran to Sprouts early Saturday morning before the snow hit.  We got maybe 2-3 inches, but it snowed most of the day, and it was cold.  It was 14 at some point, and didn't get much warmer.  I knew I wanted to make soup or stew going into the weekend, and I ended up making the Run Fast Eat Slow flu fighting chicken and rice stew.  There's a crockpot option, so I cooked it on high for four hours.

So far, I haven't come across a recipe from RFES that I haven't liked.  They've all been pretty good.

I think the weather then was great for watching some Winter Olympics.  I was ready to strangle NBC since they kept talking through the entire opening ceremonies Friday night.  Just let me enjoy the grandeur in silence.  At least I can watch during the day.  So far I've watched the US women's hockey team, some biathlon, cross-country skiing, curling, and snowboarding.  Through all that, team USA has gotten 2 medals.

What I was excited about was doing both my cardio workouts in my new shoes.  Since I just head downstairs, I could get my new shoes out without getting them dirty.  They were a little bit sticky on the treadmill, but it was so nice having brand new cushion on my feet.  And I have another edition to my home gym: steps.  The kit has a platform top with two steps for each side to have a weight bench, and then two angle steps to have the bench at an incline.  I might get another set of steps to raise it higher, but I can start doing hamstring curls since my right hamstring seems to be a bit stubborn at the moment.  The last purchase I know I want is ankle weights.

  1. That soup looks good! I just finished reading RFES. Why do you have a plastic bag in the crock pot?

    1. It's a crock pot liner. Best thing ever! It cooks everything but then you pick it up and throw it away. Clean up is done.

  2. Sounds like the perfect soup for this time of year! The Olympics announcers are annoying for sure -- sometimes making fun of them is part of the fun. I'm also getting annoyed at hearing results on the news before they are broadcast but I guess that's unavoidable.

    1. It is unavoidable, especially with the time difference. Rio was easy to follow.

  3. I may be the last runner who has not yet gotten the RFES book. My bad. I keep hearing the recipes are good.

  5. That soup looks so tasty. Perfect for the way the weather has been lately. I also got new shoes this week and was unable to take them outside once due to the weather. Hopefully this week it clears up a bit and it's not so messy. You'll have to share about your home gym.

    1. I'm really picky, and normally there aren't that many recipes I liked in a cookbook. This one has quite a few I like.

    1. The cats have gotten used to each other over the year. The more time they spend together at a time, the more comfortable they are.

  8. Sounds like the home gym is coming along nicely! And I was really annoyed at NBC's olympic coverage too. Hopefully it gets better.

    1. I use the mute button a lot. NBC Sports is better than NBC.

I'm jealous of your winter, we need winter here in Utah literally we've had none, we keep hoping for a very wet spring to make up for it!

  16. I'm proud to say I cracked open RFES but I've yet to make a thing. Progress. Haha! I've been watching the Olympics like a hawk too. Not sure how I missed Chloe Kim last night. I feel like they didn't cover her until after she won. WTH?
