10K Confirmation

After getting home and doing some stretching, then another 10-minute Pure Barre segment, this time for thighs and seat, I opened my email to see this:

EEEKK!  It's almost here!  I waited until I got to work this morning to print it off, and I have bib #46126.  I do have a slower projected finish time than what I've been training for, but that's OK.  I based it off my BolderBoulder time, which I hope to better.  Training's gone well, even if I did skip both weekday runs last week.

October has been a good month for running though.  I hit both my 5-miler and 6-miler successfully, and I hope that can carry over for race day.  Race day is always the unknown factor.  I know I have to be careful with what I eat and drink, and this will be my first afternoon race.  I'm sure I'll be sticking with simple foods, but it is Vegas, and I don't want to be a party pooper too much.


I can't believe there are only two months left of the year.  Halloween, then my race, then Thanksgiving...

Monday Musings 10/30

Good morning.  I won't say it's a good Monday since we're getting freezing drizzle.  It's hard to know what the streets look like when it's pitch dark when I'm driving in.  Less than one week and we fall back an hour.  Then I'll head to be at 8:30... yay?

The weekend was low key, and I enjoyed it.  I'm dealing with some side effects from stress, probably from work.  I got back into running, and hopefully won't miss any more runs before Vegas.  I should actually get my treadmill tomorrow, so that'll give me options for next week.  The sun is currently setting around 6, which means once we get the time change, the sun will be setting around 5.  If that means my last two runs are inside, so be it.  I don't have any reflecting clothes, no blinkers, and no headlamp.

Which going off on a tangent... driving out of my neighborhood today I could barely see one of the residents, who was in the middle of my lane, walking her dogs.  With very little light from the street lamp, misting, and her not wearing any lights, I almost yelled at her.  She should be on the sidewalk if she doesn't have any safety lights!

Saturday I carved my pumpkin while watching a Halloween movie.  I had to take breaks because it'd been years since I carved a pumpkin, and my hand kept cramping.  I had help carving, as always.

My parents have a Disney villains carving kit, and I carved the Evil Queen.

I hope once it's outside in the dark, the light will make the pattern stand out more.  I got fake candles from Michael's this weekend, which weren't easy to find.  They've switched over to Christmas already.  I understand Thanksgiving is like the black sheep of the holidays, but seeing Christmas decor on 10/28 is too much.

My First Runfess

I think this may be my first runfession post.  I had a few things  to talk about...  I'm also linking up for Friday Five, so here are 5 runfessions.

I'll runfess I haven't run since Sunday.  Since I pushed my run to Sunday, I didn't run on Tuesday, like normal.  My normal schedule is Saturday long run, then first weekday run on Tuesday.  I like having 2 days after my long run to recover.  I felt out of alignment too, and didn't want to do anything to make it worse, until I saw my chiropractor on Wednesday.  I didn't run Wednesday either, and I used Thursday's snow as an excuse to stay inside.  Snowy and temps in the 20s isn't fun.

I runfess I'm tired of running around my neighborhood.  I hit this point in the spring too, but it's so convenient to just run out of my house.  After 8 weeks of running the routes, I'm bored.  That may have played into my decision to not run so far this week.  I need new scenery, but that's only going to happen if I move.  I focused on strength training instead.  Gotta make sure that right hip stays quiet.

I'll admit part of me is ready to be done training.  I need a break, in general.  Thanksgiving will be here soon :)  My family's going through the Thanksgiving TV specials we can watch on DVD.

I runfess I added Las Vegas to my weather.com options.  I know nothing is set yet, but I'll be checking each day.  I know what I'll wear for the race, but I need to know what I need to pack.  Gotta pack light too since I'm bringing back chocolate.

When I washed my 2XU calf sleeves this weekend, I forgot they were in the laundry load, and I threw everything in the dryer.  They don't look any worse for wear, and I was able to get them on.  I need good compression on my calves, but that's not a way to get it.  I panicked because I was afraid I would need a new pair.

It's Time to Taper

Today's TOTR topic is rate your month, but next week's topic is something I've posted about already.  I'll rate my month on the 31st.  Mostly because I've hit the taper zone, and I kind of don't want to run today.  Since I pushed my long run to Sunday, it's a quick turnaround to run today, even though it's only 2 miles on the schedule.  I'll see how I feel after work.  The temps should be nice, and that could entice me outside.

I can't believe I'm already tapering.  Really, I feel like I just started this training cycle, and it started the week before Labor Day.  I've only skipped two runs, both Thursday runs, and my mileage for training is at 62.25.  I've been hit or miss with biking, but it's been more cardio cross training than I did before.  I've had busy Sundays, and sometimes biking gets pushed aside.  I still do my strength training.

I have two more weekend runs before race day.  3 miles this weekend, then 4 the next.  Seriously, where has this season gone?  11 weeks in the training plan, and there is now less than 3 weeks before race day.

Monday Musings 10/23

10/23, it's mole day!  Anyone remember this from high school chemistry?

This weekend was low key, especially compared to last weekend.  No stomach bug, and no volunteering for RnR Denver.  Win?  I spent most of my day inside on Saturday with the wind, hoping the wind would die down for my run on Sunday.  Runner-me definitely doesn't like when fronts move in because of the wind.  Between the wind and the chill on Saturday, I knew 6 miles wouldn't be fun.  I downloaded a new book and enjoyed the first few chapters.  I saw it on RunawayBridalPlanner's IG, and I've always been fascinated with Jack the Ripper.

It also turned out to be a good idea to push my run because unbeknownst to my neighborhood, the school at the neighborhood entrance was hosting a 5k.  I have no problem with a 5k using the main path, but there was no advertisement, no reaching out to the residents, nothing.  If I had chosen to do my 6 miles Saturday, I would've been on the same path at the runners, going in the opposite direction!  I was certainly wondering what was going on as I was driving out, to head to the grocery store.

I did get out the door Sunday morning.  It was warmer, and wasn't as windy when I started.  The wind did pick up during my run, and the sun was firmly behind clouds, until I finished my run.  Seriously?!  I did all 6 miles in wind, clouds, and gray, and the minute I walk inside my home, the sun is out in full force.  I was lucky though, since the wind picked up even more after my run.  When I did a couple quick errands to Walgreens and Sprouts, the wind was really whipping around.  Allie, of course, did her normal routine.

Now that I've done 6 miles, I feel like I can tackle the 10k, though I do still have some homework to do.  For the last mile, my right piriformis was talking a bit, but my IT band remained OK.  I know not to overdo the strength training, but I know I need to focus a little bit more on the right and left piriformis.  And the shoes seem to be working out too.  The knock on my left ankle hasn't bothered me for the 3 runs this week.  I hope that continues, because it would be one less thing to worry about. Friday Five 10/20

Can I runfess?  Even in the off-cycle?  I continued to splurge a little bit to celebrate my promotion, and I bought this.

Oiselle sent an email to the Volee, offering the long sleeve shirt version of their singlet, in all colors, and I splurged on the aqua.  I've passed on these offers before, but now that 1) I'm in Colorado, and 2) I want to do the MCM 10k next year, I new I needed something that was more than the singlet.  I know the MCM is a year away, since this weekend is race weekend, but I'll be prepared.

Speaking of which, MCM Mama Runs and Running on Happy are doing the marathon this weekend.

I can't say I'm surprised, but it's still disappointing that Run Disney races at Disneyland are on hiatus.  They're using construction as the reason, but it's hard to say if that is truly the reason.  Run Disney was silent through the whole summer about what was happening.  A simple explanation when rumors were swirling would have helped immensely.

My new shoes seem to be doing fine.  I did 3 miles on Tuesday, and 2 miles yesterday, leading up to 6 miles this weekend.  It's always fun to have new shoes, and the new cushion is definitely a plus.   It's always a surprise when I think my current shoes are still working, and there's enough cushion to them, and then I try on the new pair.  There's so much more cushion!

I think it's safe to say my neighbors love Halloween.  I run loops through the housing blocks, and this one house is going all out.  Each week there seems to be something new.  I have a string of pumpkin lights for the front banister, but I'll put those up closer to Halloween.  I'm also looking at carving patterns for my pumpkin.  My parents have a pattern set of Disney villains, and I'll sit down this weekend to look at what pattern I'll want to carve, and then bring it in to work and make a copy.

I'm working my way through Halloween movies and TV specials.  Netflix notified me that it sent me Practical Magic, which should be today's movie :)

Favorite Fall Running Gear

After Sunday morning, I'd say fall is well and truly here.  After the snow last Monday, OK, I'm not sure which season it is.  The calendar shows we still have a ways to go until the winter solstice, but temps are all crazy right now.  Do I bring out my fall gear?  If I do, I feel like I have to put it away because it warms up again.

The gear I ordered arrived last week, and I'm loving both of them.  I REALLY love the New Balance pullover.  The fabric is light, it's soft, it's got thumb holes!! and it has a hoodie.  Plus there's plenty of breathing ability so I'm not getting stuffy while wearing it.  The NB marketing team put this on the cover of their catalog, which got my attention.  Well played.

I also went to my LRC and bought a new pair of shoes.  I was looking for the 7's since the new models just came out, but they didn't have them.  I bought the 8's, and since today is 2 miles on my schedule, it should be perfect for a test run.  I'm always nervous when a new model comes out, but the guy at the store said the 8's have the same support as the 7's, and the only change to the 8's was the superficial top of the shoe.  I'm OK with that.  Since I have a couple different pairs of Superfeet inserts, I'll play around with them and figure out what works best.

Monday Musings 10/16

This past week was strange, between the weather, and doctor's appointments, and then the weekend was even stranger.  I pick dup at bug on Saturday, which would explain why my run was so crappy.  But let's back up.

When I got in the office Friday after my doctor's appointment, I saw the Competitor Group had sent out a message about Vegas, sitting in my Gmail:

Good news.  I know there was a small part of me that thought there was a possibility the race could be cancelled, but I didn't think it would come to that.  The 5k and 10k courses remain the same, and they will change the start line for the half and full.  I expect extra security, but I'm quite happy the weekend will happen.  I can do my small part and put my money into the Vegas economy.

On to Saturday.  When I woke up, I felt fine, and ate breakfast, delayed a bit, but got to the gym to use the treadmill.  We had wind gusts of 50mph and even though I was doing 3, that was not going to be fun.  2 miles in, my stomach started feeling uneasy, but I thought maybe I was hungry and I had spent too much time between eating breakfast and getting my run going.  By mile 2.5, I threw in the towel and walked the rest of the distance to complete 3.  I chalked it up to fasting the previous day and completed my errands.  Then I was sick after lunch, and felt like utter crap for about 7 hours.  At least Allie enjoyed my prone state.  She knew I needed snuggles.

I was scared too, because I had signed up to help volunteer at a water stop with Oiselle at the RnR Denver race.  I didn't want to automatically cancel, but I had no idea what I'd gotten into, bug wise.  I spent Saturday afternoon resting, then started eating Saltines, moved to homemade soup, then spaghetti.  Eventually I did rebound, so I kept my plans to head down into Denver.

This was my first time ever volunteering at a race, and lucky us, it was 29 degrees when we started setting up.  It was quite brisk, even when the sun did eventually come out.  Our water stop was around mile 5, so we were early on the course.  I even got a t-shirt out of it, and am thinking of putting it in my t-shirt quilt, whenever that gets made.

Did I mention it was brisk?  I was chilled when I got home, so I took a shot of tequila, and took a hot hot shower.  I had hot chocolate later, because I still felt chilled, but eventually I started feeling warmer.  Doing Pure Barre exercises warmed me up too.

So to say it was a strange weekend is an understatement.

Things That Make Me Go Hmmm

There is quite a lot I enjoy about life, but there are some things that drive me crazy.

1) The first one isn't tied to running outside, but at my gym.  When I'm there, inevitably there is someone in the weights section doing heavy lifting, then throwing the weights down, which makes such a big BOOM!  My gym in Texas had signs all over the weight section saying not to do that.  I wish my gym would do so as well.  I have to count down to keep from flipping out.

2) I know I've mentioned this before, but why do some runners wear the race's shirt for the race?  That goes fully against anything new on race day.  What if the shirt's not tech?  Runners don't have a chance to have a long run in the shirt.  How's the cut?  Is it going to chafe?  I know to each their own, but I won't wear the race shirt until after the race.

3) I'll throw this one in right now since I'm currently doing it.  Why, whenever I have my annual physical, why why why do I always seem to have to fast for the blood work??  I'm hungry and cranky and all I want to do is eat breakfast.  Check in is at 9 my time, with my appointment at 9:20.  I already found the new patient packet online and filled it out.  All I want is to get my blood drawn so I can start eating for the day.  At least I'm taking time off work this morning so I'm not cranky to my coworkers.

4) I'll talk about my ankle ache a little bit.  It's OK during the day, and then when I lace up for a run, that's when it starts popping up.  Even before I actually start my run.  It didn't bother me at all on Monday, but it was there during my two miles on Tuesday, and yesterday.  What gives?

5) To follow up on my comments issue from Tuesday, I haven't been able to find anything.  It's boggling my mind, and I want everyone to be able to comment.  If it's something with Blogspot, I hope they can resolve it.  I've looked at my settings, and researched online, but every place I've looked doesn't have a problem.

If I Wasn't Running...

Today's topic for TOTR is "If I Wasn't Running." 

But first, an update from yesterday: we did get snow!  I worked from home in the morning because visibility was awful when I first attempted to drive in.  The clouds were so low, and snow was swirling around.  I like to have my wits about me, especially during the first snow storm because people do stupid stuff during the first storm.  It's like they have a brain fart and don't remember how to drive in this stuff.

It's already melting, and the week should warm up nicely.  At least the Flatirons looks gorgeous this morning when I was driving in.  Pity I wasn't a passenger because I would've taken a picture.

Also off topic, I was notified about comment issues and the comment disappearing.  I am looking into this, but my settings haven't changed, so I'm a bit confused.  Does anyone have experience with this and be able to give me some tips?

So, onto the topic.

If I wasn't running...

I've already been there a couple times, and I know what happens.  I go stir crazy.  I fell out of running after I graduated from college and segued into the workforce.  I was doing well enough during the summer months, but it was tough to get up early during the cold winter months, and I fell out of working out.  It's always been my stress release, and now I didn't have a way to get out all of the negative stress work induced.

The second was when my ITBS was at its worst.  I've had injuries before, in high school and college, but I never had anything like this.  I spent that time trying yoga, going through a couple rounds of PT, and I discovered Pure Barre.  It certainly gave me a better appreciation of being able to run, and when I got cleared, I've treasured every day.

I definitely was a gym rat, and I have to be active to be happy.

Monday Musings 10/9

Another week, and I think we're steamrolling into winter.  I woke up Saturday to see a winter weather watch on my app, for Monday.  Of course the forecast kept changing from about last Wednesday.  Up to one inch of snow has become 4 to 7, and a freeze watch.  Tomorrow should be interesting.  I did grab work to bring home on Friday in case I can't get out of the neighborhood.  I live in a valley with rolling hills, and there are people who can barely traverse the hills in sunshine.

I'm still battling a maybe cold, but I got 5 miles done on Saturday, and I felt good during the run.  After skipping my run on Thursday, I felt ready to run Friday after work.  However, this front started coming through, and the wind was about 40mph when I was driving home.  That was not going to be fun (it certainly wasn't fun driving), so I took another rest day, and completed my run Saturday morning.  The wind wasn't as bad, and I got to see the trees have changed color, AND I saw a bald eagle fly over me about halfway through.  That's the first I've seen one on the front range.  I've seen plenty of hawks, but I've only seen eagles in the mountains.

I did some more research on treadmills too.  I've narrowed my choice down to NordicTrac, either the 1750 or the 2450.  After having to delay my run from Friday, having a treadmill would've been nice.

Sunday was different.  I woke up at 5:30 for no reason, and finally got up in time to watch the Chicago marathon on NBCSports.  Afterwards I got my biking in, finished up errands, and then bonked when I got home.  I don't know if whatever is going around got me, but I was sluggish most of the day.  I'm still fighting it, and was determined to do some strength training in the afternoon.  I hadn't done any Thursday or Friday, and I did light strength training Saturday afternoon.  Even though Sunday's was light, it was still something.  I didn't want to skip another day, and I'm stubborn about when to admit I'm sick.  I don't like to admit defeat.  Ever.

The weekend was also filled with more Halloween stuff.  I watched Witches of Eastwick, and Starz had Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.  I've never read the book, and I'd never seen the movie.  It was something to watch.  I also had some success at Target looking for Halloween decorations.  After seeing decorations going up in the neighborhood, I started getting some ideas for my front porch.  I got some pumpkin lights for the bannister, and I got some fun lights for my office.    

I also had some fun shopping on Friday.  I got promoted at work last week, and of course I had to buy some running gear to celebrate.  I wanted another Oiselle long sleeve Flyte, and I got a catalog from New Balance, and loved the look of their Heat Hoodie.  This Texan needs more layers for outdoor running.  I already had to get out my winter headband to keep my ears warm from the wind on Saturday!

That Training Schedule

TGIF!!  It's been a long week, and I was exhausted yesterday.

First up on the post, good luck to all running the Chicago marathon Sunday, and I have family doing the Army 10-miler.  We're really into the fall racing season.  A special good luck to Kathryn running Chicago, as her FIRST marathon!

The topic for today is scheduling, and for the first time, I'm actually following a training schedule for this 10k.  I kind of winged it the last two 10k races I did, and the first one I ever did was in the middle of training for my first half marathon.  I needed a 10k time for corral placement, and luckily there was one around the time I needed to hit that mileage for that training.

The most important thing for me with training is a flexible schedule.  Life is what it is.  I'm calmer training for a 10k when I have to skip runs, but I'm not happy about it.  I've now skipped two runs, but it was both precautionary.  The first one was for my ankle, and I skipped my run yesterday because the busy-ness of last weekend caught up with me.  I was flat out exhausted.  Plus people are getting sick at work, my dad's been battling a cold, and I felt that dry/scratchy throat feeling the past couple days.  I'm tempted to buy a medical mask to make it through until I get my flu shot.

Looking at my schedule too, after my 5-miler this weekend, I'll be in the second half of training.  My plan is 11 weeks, and this weekend would be the 6-week mark.  Only 5 weeks to go.  That's crazy!  I signed up for Vegas at the very end of May, to battle my post-race blues.  This Sunday will mark exactly 5 weeks until the race.

Until then, I'll be using the vitamin-C Halls cough drops, and I'm getting Airborne this weekend.  I don't want to skip anymore runs, and I absolutely do not want to get sick.  I don't think I have a choice, but I will do my best.

Reflecting on Las Vegas

It's hard to have a post talking about training for Vegas after the tragedy that happened.  I was watching the local news Monday morning for weather updates, for my commute, and breaking news about the shooting flashed across.  I'm still shaking my head.  What is this world coming to?  Thankfully my friend is safe.  While I was driving into work, I was hoping she'd post something so I knew she was OK.

I certainly hope the race goes on.  I can do my own little part of helping the Vegas economy with the race weekend, and spend money at the hotel and restaurants.  I certainly would understand though, if they're not able to put on the series, since they'd be working with the same agencies that were impacted by Sunday's tragedy.  RnR did release a statement saying at the appropriate time they'll start dialogue with the city and police officials to make sure the series can go on safely.

For now, I'll continue training in case it's a go.  I don't know what else to do until RnR decides what to do.  One thing's for sure: if the race is on, I will have Tom Petty songs on my playlist.

Monday Musings 10/2

What a busy weekend!  I think I should've taken Monday off too, but I'll make it thru the week.

The weekend started off Friday afternoon, with my mom and I getting pedicures.  The place we went to is pretty nice, and they do nail art.  We bot got flowers since the theme of the wedding was blooming into love.  The wedding shower did a lot with that theme, and nail art was a fun touch for the wedding itself.  I went with a dark maroon color, and then white flowers.

My new Christmas ornaments also arrived on Friday.

Saturday morning was a trip to Anderson Farms in Erie.  I went with my parents and then a friend with her 18-month old daughter.  I knew she would love the pumpkin patch, and she even picked out her own pumpkin.  I got a large pumpkin, and I'll decide on a carving stencil later in the month.

Saturday evening was the rehearsal dinner, and then Sunday was the wedding.  The weather was beautiful for the ceremony, bright and very sunny.  We were warned to bring sun screen, sunglasses, and hats.  The ceremony was short, but all of those were very much appreciated.  The venue was the new events center at Folsom Stadium, on a terrace over looking the field, with the Flatirons behind the stadium.
