the Morning After

Well, my Red Wings are out of the playoffs.  I had a feeling Tampa would win last night.  Game 7, at home.  Yeah, I'm bummed, but not too sad.  If our goalie hadn't played the way he did, it would not have been a long series at all.  'Scuse me while I go watch these to feel better.

And yeah, Tampa's GM is on 3 of these covers...

Tank Tops

This could have been a topic to post yesterday for Tuesdays on the Run, but I planned this as a What I'm Loving post already.

Running tank tops.  I'm incredibly picky about what I wear when I'm running and lately I hate anything with sleeves.  I've actually been that way for a while, and I'm building up my collection of work out tank tops.  My preferences for the tanks have also changed from wearing anything to being even more picky about the cut of the tanks.  I hate tight tanks now because they ride up my torso and bunch in the middle.  Anybody else hate that?  Due to that, I'm wearing tank tops that are either semi-fitted or loose, and I just tuck the straps under my sports bra.

I'm also branching out in different colors.  Notice how workout clothes have the standard color selection?  I fell in love with my Saucony tank top clear across the running store.  It's purple with lighter purple in the design, with yellow trim.  Basically, it shouted all the way to me "pick me! pick me!"  It was one of those in which I hoped it fit because I was buying it anyway.  I bumped up a size to keep it loose and I love everything about it.

I don't have a favorite brand, but I will say I hate Nike tank tops.  They may feel their cuts are loose, but they're not loose enough to flow over my hips unless I go up sizes, which makes the tank way too big.  Currently I have Under Armour, Adidas and Saucony in my tank top collection, and I'm always on the look out for more.  If I have down time at work, I'm usually looking at Dick's Sporting Goods, or the brand's direct website.  I'm having much more luck ordering items online than finding them in the store.  Good thing I know what size fits me!

Track and Field Events

One thing I didn't mention yesterday is I watched the Penn Relays Saturday with Allie.  The whole time I wanted to watch the broadcast but when a sleepy cat is right up against you, you slowly start falling asleep too.  I held out until the Drake Relays came on afterwards.  As you can tell, I wasn't allowed to move.

Anybody else love watching running events on TV, or even running documentaries?  I almost screamed at my computer last year when Meb turned on to Boylston.  I wanted to go out and run after seeing both Spirit of the Marathon docs.  And of course I listen to Chariots of Fire when I'm running (which will never be the same due to the Olympics and Rowan Atkinson).

I also think either the 30 for 30 team or the Spirit of the Marathon team needs to put something together for the Boston Marathon.  It's got so much history to it and it's so prestigious because of the qualifying method.  If only we could get them to do it.

Monday Musings 4/27

I need a new cross training exercise y'all.  I've been biking on Thursdays but now I'm bored with that.  I need to figure out something new, otherwise I have two consecutive rest days at the end of the week.  Maybe more yoga?  If so, yoga will be Mondays and Thursdays, but I have to admit I've had great runs the past two Saturdays, when I did have both Thursday and Friday as rest days.

Saturday I decided to try a new to me recipe of chicken salsa verde in the crock pot.  I followed this recipe from Skinnytaste, but I did throw in a cup of chicken broth because I didn't think the 16oz of salsa verde would keep the meat moist by itself.  I made Spanish rice to go with it and put the meat into corn tacos.  This was a success!  That is one I'm keeping since I'm looking for easy chicken recipes for the summer.  I have a feeling my crock pot will get some good use.

Yeah, that bag is now empty, but on Sunday I found the chocolate-covered cherries at Sprouts, so I have more for the week.  I need to come up with dessert ideas while Blue Bell cleans up their production line.  Once Blue Bell is back up and running, I'll have my ice cream again.  In the mean time, I'm getting dessert and a fruit serving rolled into one.

My friends and I got together Sunday to watch Monty Python and the Holy Grail.  There's been a bit of press about the 40th anniversary this year and the Pythons being at the Tribeca Film Festival so I thought a viewing of our own was in store.  Anybody else Monty Python fans?

Blogs to Read

Friday 5 and it's 5 blogs to read.  I read a lot and don't know how to narrow down to a list of 5, but here's what I like to read about.

1) Recipes.  I'm always looking for new recipes and so blogs that promote healthy, easy recipes are fun to go to.  Right now I've been looking at Skinnytaste and getting some more crockpot ideas.  I'm trying her chicken salsa verde this weekend.

2) Through Heather's Looking Glass inspired me to start my own blog, back when it was Running with Sass.  Until I found it, I wasn't really reading blogs either.  I discovered this whole new world

3) Travel blogs or travel sections are always fun to read.  I traveled a lot until I became an independent adult - rather, living on my own and paying for everything.  If I didn't have that darn rent, I could save up for some good trips.

4) Authors started having blogs, some have moved to social media.  I still find their blogs fun to read, and sometimes they add tidbits on what inspired them to write a certain book or what they found interesting during their research.

5) Runner's blogs.  By this I mean runners like Kara Goucher.  C'mon, you've though about what it's like to be an elite, right?  Well, if not, their blogs are still quite insightful and provide a peak at the person in and outside of running.

All Those Paris Movies

Thinking Out Loud.  I got this topic on Sunday as I was looking at the movies I have.  I've given up Once Upon a Time so I need some ideas to watch on Sunday.  I know Penny Dreadful is coming up in May, but I don't have Showtime...

One thing that hit me as I was looking through my DVD titles, I realized I have many movies that either take place in Paris or France, or have scenes in Paris.  If I start watching them, I need wine to go with my viewing.

My First Pure Barre

As I posted yesterday, I signed up for my first Pure Barre class, which was Sunday.  I knew going into the class that it would be tough.  I never think new classes are easy because I want to do my best, and anything new is a shock to my muscles.  Some of the exercises we did use small hand weights or resistance bands, but a lot of the exercises used body weight.

One exercise in particular, using the barre, targeted my periformis like you wouldn't believe.  I know part of their weakness resulted in my ITBS but it's not like I wasn't trying to strength train.  It's just that nothing's worked.  These exercises had one leg as the stabilizer, and I know I should've felt the exercise in the leg that was working, but nope.  The periformis in the stabilizing leg took over and that's all I felt.  When we switched sides, I could balance out the struggle.

The other interesting part is we were told we want our muscles shaking almost immediately.  We were told that means the muscle is changing, which I guess is the whole point?  Again, we were at the barre, and since this set of exercises is done on tippy-toes, I was shaking like a paint mixer.  If that's the objective, crushed it.

Overall, it was challenging but in a good way.  I'd like to take more classes and I have to master the "tuck" technique.  It's not instinctive, so when I was struggling Sunday, that tuck went out the window.  And the quick tuck movements?  I felt like a jumping jelly bean trying to get it right. 

Monday morning I felt everything in my periformis, and walking around Sunday after class was interesting.  When I had to stop and get gas, I almost had to hold onto the car as I walked around to the pump because my periformis(es) wanted to give out on me.  And I would totally do it again.

Viewing the Boston Marathon

Did everyone have a chance to watch the Boston Marathon?  I found out I could go back after the elites were done and watch the section I missed due to my meeting.  Which lasted all of 21 minutes, btw.  My left screen looked like this most of the morning, and then after lunch when I was catching up.

I also came across this meme on FB, shared from Girls Run the 901.

No kidding.  Shock of shocks, I didn't need bad commentary, and I didn't need multiple commercials of bad beer and Viagra and/or Cialis.  Take that Super Bowl!  Luckily the live stream didn't have commercials.

Marathon Monday is the one day I miss Boston, but thankfully I can still watch the race :-)

Monday Musings 4/20

Happy Marathon Monday!  I'll be watching the live stream on my computer but I have a meeting this morning :-(

Weekend recap with Tara at Running N Reading.

First thing, my couch was delivered on Friday!  I wanted to stay home after the delivery but I did have to go to work.  Allie was under the bed when I left, but I put her blanket on the couch to help her adapt to the new furniture while I was at work.  I stayed extra minutes after the delivery to see if she would come out and check out the sofa, but she was sprawled out under my bed, sleeping, so I let her be.

It was a busy Saturday since I decided to take advantage of a sale at JC Penney since I needed to replace some shoes I keep at work.  I bought a pair of St. John's Bay shoes last year for a wedding, and the shoes doubled up as work shoes.  I love the style, love that the heel is less than 1.5" and they are comfy as all get.  I bought the same pair in a gold color, and I hit up Bath and Body Works.  I got some pretty good loot!

Thursday, Heather wrote a post about stepping out of the comfort zone, and I took her advice.  I'd been thinking about Pure Barre, but figured it was out of my budget.  Then I realized if it worked and really helped me build up strength, I could possibly drop a PT session.  I signed up for my first class, which was Sunday.  I need something new to get into my schedule since I feel like I'm in a little bit of a cross training rut.  I skipped my bike workout Thursday, like I did a couple weeks ago, and I feel like I need something different to mix things up.

Allie even decided to help me wake up for my class, but a 5:40 wake up call for a 9:30 class was a bit much.  Thanks hun!  She woke me up by treating me like a speed bump and walking over my neck to the other side of the bed.  Seriously?  She's so thoughtful.  A serious nap happened after lunch.

And my run on Saturday was great!  It was one of those runs where everything clicked.  My intervals ticked off quickly, I found a great rhythm and I had great songs.  I have many playlists to chose from when I'm working out, and this one I call my soundtrack list.  I have songs from various movies and Broadway plays.  My favorite song this time around was "Mean Green Mother from Outer Space" from Little Shop of Horrors.  For you Disney fans, that's Howard Ashman and Alan Menken :)

These Are (5) of My Favorite Brands

Another Friday 5, this one I think I really like :-)  Five brands to love.  Yay!

1) Starting at my feet, I wear Brooks Adrenaline.  I was fitted for the 14's last year and I bought the 15's in February, in what Brooks calls the raspberry color.  I have high arches so the Adrenaline's support my feet, with some extra help with my Superfeet inserts.  The one change that took some getting use to on the 15's is where they placed the reflector strip in the front.  It's on top of the mesh, near my big toe.  My big toe would hit that a lot when running and I thought it was hitting the edge of the toe box.

2) Running Skirts, I can say enough about them.  I didn't start off using skirts but when I splurged and went with what I call the Minnie Mouse skirt, I fell in love.  They're super comfy with two big pockets on the side so I don't have to carry everything while I'm running.  I had to do that with running shorts since the pockets are so small, and I felt kind of like a pack mule.

3) Zensah sports bras aren't anything fancy, but they're exactly what I need.  I'm not "gifted" and don't need a lot of extra support, but I still need support for high impact running.  Zensah is great for my torso and I've never needed any breaking in period for the sports bras.  They also come in a lot of fun colors, just like their calf sleeves.

4) Sweaty Bands.  Yeah, I might have a problem since they keep coming out with new designs.  I always find ones I love, and now they're designing special ones for races, like Disney.  I love the Cheshire Cat design I ordered in January.

5) Last, I use Neutrogena sunscreen because it doesn't make me feel like a greased pig.  Once I apply it, I don't even feel like I'm wearing sunscreen, which is great!  And I need sunscreen.  I'm so fair y'all I even impressed my dermatologist the first time I met her.  When you impress a dermatologist whose been practicing for 20 years, you're white.  Currently I have a bottle of SPF 55, but will go down to SPF 30.

IT Band Rolling

This may be a long post, but it will be all about my lacrosse-ball rolling.  I learned these tricks at Airrosti last year, and it helped get me back to running.  I started doing these on my left leg too since I was only foam rolling that side.  My left leg was the good leg until I got a dull ache in the outside of that knee before Easter.  I don't know if it was a whoopsie since it hadn't been a problem, and I don't know if I would call it a problem just yet.  I'm keeping my eye on it though.

I start with my foam roller to warm things up.  I've started with the lacrosse ball before, and it hurts.  I do about 20 rolls each side, unless the leg does feel tight.  Then I'll do 2 sets of 20.  Sometimes if I feel a knot, I'll keep the knot on the foam roller and move my leg slowly side to side.  It helps to loosen the knot just a little bit.

Lacrosse ball:

I played lacrosse in high school and college and still have these with me.  They gave me some good bruises if I got hit.  It's solid rubber, and is SO much better than a tennis ball.  I smooshed the tennis balls so I threw them in the front closet until I got Allie.  Now the tennis balls are cat toys.

Trigger points - I let the ball dig into the trigger points for a few minutes, then roll the spot.  I start at the hip and work my way down the leg.  The main point is to work through any tightness that's built up.

* Hip - there's a crevice between the hip bone and thigh.  You'll know it because the ball fits in the crevice.  If there's no give, you're on the bone.  The below picture shows my hip crevice, at a much better angle than rolling on the floor.

* Mid leg - right on the IT band.  If I have the trigger point correct, I'll feel the pressure in my knee.  Roll as well

* Knee - right above the knee on the IT band.

* Glutes - I roll my glutes too in case the tightness starts there.  The piriformis is a great place to start, but I get the glutes and upper hamstrings.

All of this I was given to do on my own.  The Airrosti work was so good at digging down deep in the IT band, and the lacrosse ball exercises I did at home.  When I was discharged from Airrosti, I was told to keep these up to keep the leg loose.

I Want to Go Back to Cartegena

What I'm loving... Jimmy Buffett's "I Want to Go Back to Cartegena."  There are two versions of this song on his most recent album, Songs from St. Somewhere, the first one just him singing, then the bonus track is the song with him and Fanny Lu, with most of her part in Spanish.  I love that this song sounds different from most of the tropical songs he sings, and I think it's great to run to.  It's just a combo of different instruments and style.

Try staying still while listening to the song.  I know I can't.  I hoped he would play this song last year at the concert since he did in Houston, but sadly, he didn't :(

Spring Season Update

The theme today is spring training update.  I've updated y'all with my plan to not do a 5k this spring and keep slowly building and having fun.

That being said, who looks at event calendars and race websites, kind of like window shopping?  I do.  I'm not sure it's a good thing but I certainly do it.  I've been good since my Napa trip is providing the distraction, but before the planning, and even in the height of my ITBS battle, I would still window shop races.  I know I'll go back to that after Napa.

I decided big races are for race-cations and smaller races are ok for the local area.  I did the whole run a race, go back to work the next day, and it was so anti-climatic.  If I did a vacation, I could sleep in the next day, slowly make my way through the day, maybe fly back home.  I found out then that I need that Monday after a half marathon to recover and treat myself.  

Can y'all hop back to it after a race or do y'all need at least a day of vacation to recover?

Monday Musings 4/13

This past week I did two days of yoga.  Yes, two!  Yay me.  I did core work on Sunday and my lower back has been aching since, and after doing a Jillian Michaels level 3 workout, my hamstrings needed stretching.  I normally bike on Thursdays but I got plenty of cardio on level 3 so I threw in an extra session of yoga.  My hamstrings were more sore the next day, but I felt like I still helped them out.

Now that I have my Napa vineyards set, I'm tempted to try their wine, but I want to wait until the trip so I'm surprised.  Instead, I'm buying other wines.  Makes sense to me :)  I really think Total Wine should have a rewards program.  Now that I've been shopping there, I see how many kinds of wine they have, and how knowledgable their employees are.  I bought a highly recommended Malbec to celebrate in a way.  I "adulted" this weekend and bought a sleeper sofa.  I'd been saving up for one and I pulled the trigger.  It's in stock so delivery will be Thursday!  I'm not sure about this whole adult thing, but I'm excited about the sofa.

Finally I decided to buy new inserts for my shoes.  I wear Superfeet Berry inserts and couldn't remember the last time I bought a new pair.  My feet have been sore lately, which got me thinking about the inserts and I decided it was time for new ones.  I don't know if they will help my knees, but they couldn't hurt, right?  I started keeping my golf ball in the freezer ice tray because of soreness and I'm hoping the inserts will help in that aspect.

World Traveler

Today's Friday Five is about trips we've taken.  You can find in-depth reports linked on my travel page, but I'll chose 5 places.

1) Paris - Sights, sounds, food and wine!  Paris is so much fun and walk around as much as you can.  Buy crepes from the street vendors.  They're made right there so the crepe is warm and the toppings and nutella are ooey gooey delicious!  If you want a challenge, skip the elevator lines at the Eiffel Tower and climb the stairs.  Even with all those steps, it's faster than waiting.

2) St. Petersburg - I've been to some European countries multiple times, but I have a feeling I'll only be in St. Petersburg once.  We got in on a cruise, otherwise there are so many hoops and red tape to get a visa.

3) Venice - Venice is unlike any city I've been too.  To be in a city whose heyday was well before the US was "discovered" is amazing.

4) Copenhagen - Another great walking city.  We walked from our hotel, around the city square, and out to the harbor to see the Little Mermaid statue and back.  Oh, wear walking shoes!  A lot of these cities still have old cobblestones in the walkways.

5) Finally, one place I would love to visit is Spain!  Food and wine but also so much more.

Low Maintenance Fashion

Tuesday I followed a Facebook link, and it's so me.  It's not even funny how me it is.  Low maintenance fashion.  That's me to a T.

I'm not in to a fashion.  I'm not fashion inept, but I don't pay attention to the trends.  I know what looks good on me and a lot of times, the trends don't.  Either colors or cuts don't work for my complexion or body type.  No wonder I'm so picky.  My biggest fear in college was getting a job that required me to wear suits every day.  I can't tell y'all how uncomfortable suits make me.  Thankfully I can rock business casual and I get to wear jeans on Fridays.  With my sneakers.

In high school, I had 4 pairs of shoes: running shoes, cleats, flip flops and snow boots.  Now I have running shoes, two pairs of flip flops (one's fancy), and 1 pair of dress shoes.  Still only 4 pairs of shoes, and my work shoes wouldn't even qualify as kitten heels.  They're also open-toed so my toes don't get blisters.  I'll even wear these shoes in the winter since cold toes >>>> blisters.  Anything that interferes with running is out.

The only bullet point that doesn't match my style is #18.  I wear my contacts all the time, partly for vanity, partly because I need to wear sunglasses, even on cloudy days.  I found this article fascinating since I fit practically every bullet point listed.  The 20/80 rule is me, maybe even 20/90.  Don't get me wrong, I love shopping, but I rarely buy.


Can we talk about coming back from vacation?  I know it was only 4 days, but it was 4 days of me eating yummy crap.  I did 2 miles on Tuesday and I felt every gram of that yummy crap.  My legs felt a little heavy, my form was awful, and I couldn't find a rhythm.  I stuck with 2/1 ratios and just got it done.  Don't worry, Allie's here to help me foam roll

Planning for Napa

New posts for Wednesdays, this'll be my first what I'm loving.  I'm loving planning my birthday celebration trip to Napa.  My birthday was in January, but winter's boring and I was packing up everything to move.  My parents have been to Napa before, but not me.  This is my first time so why not do it big?  I love wine.

I'm due for a big birthday milestone celebration.  Seriously, the last 3 milestones have been awful.  18 was during mid-year exams, and 21 and 25 were just crappy due to events completely out of my control.  Even before my 29th I declared I was going to have a fun way to celebrate turning 30.  It didn't have to happen right on my 30th birthday, but I wanted to celebrate, and I chose Napa.

I've decided on the vineyards I want to go to, so why not do some taste testing with some of the wines.  OK, some are out of my price range, so I'll wait till the vineyard visit.  But I've seen some wines at Total Wine that I know I can splurge on, like from Chateau Montelena.  Yes, we are going to the Chateau that shocked everyone in the Judgement of Paris.  It's wine history, and I need to go.  The other places I've picked are Schramsberg, Rombauer and Baldacci.  Schramsberg was a must, it is sparkling wine.  Happy birthday to me :-)

This trip has been such a good diversion when I needed to step away from the stress of work and look over my list to whittle down.  What am I going to divert myself with after the trip?  I've watched the 3 wine movies I know of, Hollywood needs to make more.  They are A Good Year, Sideways and Bottle Shock.  Pour a glass and watch those movies.

Seasonal 5K's

Anybody notice how Fall seems to have not only many more 5K's, but the themes are a lot more fun?  Maybe it's just Texas.  I wanted to try to be ready for a 5K this spring, but I've decided to let that slide and just keep having fun and slowly building.  Deciding to let the 5K spring season go takes the pressure off.

Part of this decision is my left knee.  It's been the good knee during my whole ITBS experience and I don't want it to become a problem.  I hit it many times with lacrosse ball rolling this weekend and I've got tender spots that honestly should be bruising.  I was talking to my chiro and we were discussing run/walk intervals and he said it really is a science.  I've found the 3/1 interval is working best for me right now, but I had to experiment with other intervals to find my perfect one.

This isn't easy, but I'm having fun running again, shopping for running gear, and building playlists again.  I have more songs for my Like a Woman playlist, but I also need to take a couple out.  Those are the first ones I put in the playlist 3 years ago and they're becoming stale.  I forgot how much I love the Pitch Perfect soundtrack until it was on TV a couple weeks ago.  I have the Bellas final and it's great to run to.

Monday Musings 4/6

Weekend Update with Tara at Running N Reading.

People come and we have fun, then they have to leave :(  My mom visited on Thursday and left Sunday.  She spoiled me, we had fun, then her flight left for Denver.  *SIGH*

Thursday started with my chiro appointment and my doctor said I was 1/2-inch out of alignment, which might explain the dull ache in my left knee.  He put me back in alignment and did say my left leg felt tighter than the right.  I spent the rest of the weekend working on my legs.  Foam rolling, lacrosse ball rolling, stretching, icing.  Y'all know the drill.  After the appointment, I left to go pick up my mom from the airport.

Thursday we had lunch at La Madeleine, went shopping, bought wine, and watched the first half of the Dovekeepers.  Anybody else watch the mini-series?  Since I was DVR-ing it so we could watch it during my mom's visit, I didn't watch it live.  I wanted to watch it with fresh eyes.  It was slightly different from what I was expecting, but I also haven't read the book it's based on.  We also watched Vikings, and the show is at Ragnar's attack on Paris.  This Paris is just the island city, so nothing what I'm used to.  This is even pre-Notre Dame as we know it.

Friday was more La Madeleine, pedicures (I went with a very sunny yellow), lunch with friends, more shopping, more wine.  I'm in the market for a sleeper sofa and I've narrowed down two sofas, both at the same store.  It'll make it easy for me to bounce between the two and make a decision.  They are sleeper sofas in the showroom and are very comfortable.  I know how hard sleeper sofas can be so the comfortable factor was a pleasant surprise.

Saturday was more shopping, we finished up Dovekeepers, and ordered food from Palio's and watched movies.  Overall a very fun visit with my mom, but she had to go back to Denver :(  The rest of Sunday was usual apartment cleaning, we watched Ben-Hur before going to the airport, I watched some Scrubs, Monty Python's Life of Brian, more Scrubs, and even still had time to watch some of the Ten Commandments.  Sunday was the perfect weather to watch TV (and pout).  I didn't workout at all after Tuesday, but I needed a mental break and time to work on my left leg.  Overall it was a GREAT weekend.

Open for Suggestions

Wednesday posts... Ever since I ran out of trip reports to write up, I've been posting books I've read and loved.  But I started wondering, is there a topic y'all would like to read about?  I have thought about What I'm Loving, but I don't know if I have enough ideas to post those each week.  I'm open to suggestions though to make posts more fun.

I won't be posting the rest of the week since my mom is visiting!  We're going shopping and getting pedicures (much needed BTW) and just have fun.  Have a good Passover/Easter/weekend!
