New Avengers Race

What are y'all's thoughts on the new Avengers half marathon?  It's about time Disneyland got another race weekend.  C2C has created a frenzy and yet there were only two race weekends to qualify at Disneyland.  However, unless Chris Hemsworth is at the finish line, in Thor getup, handing out medals, I will pass on this one.  I like the Iron Man movies and Thor movies, but not the others to really be excited about this race.

I also am finally starting to feel the itch to start running again.  It all depends on my knee, but since I don't have anything to train for, I can do one mile at time and build slowly.  My plan was to pick up a pair of Altras (recommended by my therapist) but those things must be coming by an actual snail.  The Tri Shop ordered a pair in my size on Feb. 14 and the shoes still aren't in :-/

My Favorite Disney Movie

We're in the final week leading up to the Oscars and I've started watching past best picture nominees (not just because this year's crop are duds).  Sunday was the Adventures of Robin Hood and yesterday was Beauty and the Beast.  This choice may change thanks to Frozen, but my favorite Disney movie is Beauty and the Beast :)  I remember seeing it in the theater during its initial run, and I love the characters, the songs, the whole thing.  After seeing each Disney movie, I'd immediately want the soundtrack and I would memorize the songs - which I still do.  Some things don't change.  There were some references that went way over my head at the time, like Lumiere being based on Maurice Chevalier, but I get them now.

When I signed up for the Princess half 2012, I didn't even have to think about my princess choice for my bib.  It's Belle, all the way!  Not to mention I made sure to include songs from BatB on my playlist.  BatB was even my first Broadway show, when my family lived in Wisconsin.  The traveling Broadway troupe would perform in Minneapolis, and that's where I saw not only Beauty and the Beast, but I also saw Sunset Boulevard.  Just like the movie, I NEEDED the soundtrack to the Broadway show.


As much as I love movies like the Lion King, BatB has remained my favorite.  Once I get a hold of the Frozen DVD, I'll find out if BatB will hang on to the #1 spot.

Random Sunday Musings 2/23

How soon is too soon to start planning a vacation?  Next year brings two milestone birthdays in my family, including my 30th, and after the last two milestone birthdays I had were completely crappy due to events happening at that time, I've decided I deserve a good time.  To celebrate both birthdays, my family's starting to brainstorm ideas, and I may have ordered one piece of clothing in my Kohl's order last week as something to pack for this trip.  This trip, whose destination hasn't been green lit yet, but if I didn't buy that dress, I'd regret it, right?

More Frozen

I may be ready for spring, but I still love Frozen.  I have March 18th circled multiple time on my calendar so I can buy a copy of Frozen on my way home from work.  I have the songs memorized, I dressed as Anna for the Disney half, and now I have a new Frozen accessory.


My otter box and peeled, cracked, and broken and it was time I got a new iPhone cover.  After months (really, months), I finally decided on a Frozen iPhone cover.  The Disney Store partners with Zazzle for customizing these, and there were options with a lot of the characters, but ultimately I decided the cover I was going to get would have both Elsa and Anna.  The great thing is cover and phone all fit easily into my running armband!

Catching Up on the Olympics

How is everyone enjoying the Olympics?  I've mostly watched the hockey games, but there have been a couple other sports I've tried to watch.  The one day I tried watching cross-country skiing was the day my cat put me to sleep.  Allie piled on top of me, fell asleep, then I followed her example.  It wasn't that the skiing was boring, it's just when a cat's sleeping on you, you fall asleep as well.  They're very good at that.


My love of hockey dates back to when I was 7.  My parents started taking me to college games, then I discovered the NHL, then I chose my team.  My NHL team has been Detroit ever since the '92-'93 season, and despite lockouts and life happening, I'm always trying to pay attention to how they're doing.  The specific thing that caught my attention about Detroit was their fans throw octopus on the ice in celebration.  The NHL has tried to stop the tradition, but octopi still, somehow, make their way onto the ice surface :)


What's interesting is I'm currently reading Ken Dryden's book, "The Game", and during one chapter he mentions the pinnacle of your team always happens during your childhood.  It just so happens my childhood coincided with the Red Wings climb to victory, but he has a point.  My favorite Red Wings team will always be captained by Steve Yzerman and will always be coached by Scotty Bowman.

Random Sunday Musings 2/16

I've had it with this weather.  Who's ever responsible, this needs to stop! (Mother Nature, Demeter, Elsa...)  I've had it so much, I ordered a new bathing suit.  That's right, I'm declaring it's spring and I'm ready for warm weather.  Plus, I seriously needed a new bathing suit considering my other ones are over 5 years old.  I wanted a new style and color, so voila! I went online shopping.  I went with a very berry/purple color, with is in such contrast to my past bathing suits, which have either been pink or blue.  I've started to add more purple to my wardrobe and really liked this color.

I also went shopping for regular clothes and ordered two shirts and a dress.  Ever since I moved to Texas I've really needed to add to my warm weather clothes collection.  Each year I get one or two pieces so this makes it 3, and it's only February.  I just don't like shopping a lot because either the shirts are cut weird or the colors are awful or the store will have exactly what I want, but they won't have it in my size.  It seems I was successful this time around.

What To Do With Old Shoes

How do you know when it's time to get new shoes?  I don't do the whole mileage recommendation because I'm rough on shoes.  Instead I listen to my legs and check the soles of my shoes to see if they're wearing down.  If I have shin splints, I get new shoes.  If my soles look this worn down, I get new shoes:


People have asked if I donate my shoes.  The short answer is no.  As mentioned above, I am rough on shoes.  I mean, really rough on shoes, and I always have been.  When I was a toddler, my parents bought me a pair of K-Swiss shoes because they're supposed to be sturdy, and I SHREDDED them.  They were returned.  By the time I'm done with running shoes, there's not much left, either cushioning or structure.  I've even poked holes in the mesh around the toes.  There's not much to donate, so the old shoes just get thrown out.

Classic Films

This time of year seems to be all about movies.  Not only is there Oscar buzz, but TCM is doing their 31 days of Oscar.  Feb. 1 kick-started the 31 days, and I watched the Oscar documentary that night.  Afterwards TCM showed Gone with the Wind... and I have a confession about that movie.  I used to love it as a kid.  Now I can't stand it and want to knock the snot out of Scarlett.  That got me thinking about some classics I can't stand, some would consider my dislike of certain movies blaspheme, but it's true.  I have no idea if I'll watch the Oscars this year because I have no desire to see so many of the nominated best picture movies.  I've seen American Hustle and that's it.  Of course I'm rooting for Frozen to win the animation category ;-)


Anybody else find it ironic the winter Frozen is released is the winter that is quite a whopper throughout the entire country?  We got snow in Dallas on Thursday and work closed at two.  I made it home just fine and curled up on the couch with my Kindle.

And I got back to yoga on Sunday!  I keep picking up some great stretches from this class and Sunday I found a great IT band stretch :)  I'll add that to my list of daily stretches.

Random Sunday Musings 2/9

I still haven't started running.  I find it's quite nice not having anything to train for, and even though I'm strength training, I don't HAVE to do it if I want a break.  The second half of the week I did nothing, and I liked it.  When I got home Friday, my right glute felt tight, and it almost hurt when I did my IT band stretches.

I decided I needed another type of foam roller, and I got the small size Trigger Point foam roller.  I definitely feel more leverage on my muscles, and they were more loose Saturday night.  I also have to get back to yoga.  I haven't done yoga since the weekend after New Year's Day.  Yeah, I've been bad.  The plus side of not doing activities at home is Allie and I can bond.  I watched the Olympics Saturday while she piled into my lap.  The shelter was not kidding when they called her a lovebug.

Next Stop: Olympus!

The Olympics start today, and while I'm not a big fan of most of the winter sports, I love love love hockey, and will be recording as many of the games as possible.  Both men's and women's.  Fun fact: my college coach's sister was on the US women's hockey team in 2006, and she showed us her bronze medal.

The men's opening game is the 13th and the women's is the 8th.  I'm tempted to watch Miracle at some point before the games to really get in the mood.  I love the summer Olympics more because I do watch a lot more of the sports, but winter Olympics always let me indulge in hockey.  I never mastered skating, otherwise I'm pretty sure I would've played.  My parents lucked out since they didn't have to take me to 4am practices.

What Super Bowl?

I have a confession to make: I haven't watched the last 3 Super Bowls.  During Pats/Giants 2.0, I watched an NCIS marathon I put together with the seasons I had at the time (I have more now).  Last year I was at a party but the only time I looked at the TV was during New Orleans' power outage.  This year I went with some fun movies:


I haven't really watched football at all this season... and I haven't missed it either.

If anybody had been watching me watch Mamma Mia, they would've seen all types of dancing.  I love working out to the entire movie soundtrack, and it's impossible for me not to dance to the songs, even when I'm eating dinner.

Dinner happened to be tortilla soup.  Dallas had weather that should've been in New Jersey and it was perfect to make this for dinner.  I even got to blend in at the store because of the bag of Tostitos in my cart.

Random Sunday Musings 2/2

Happy February!

Going back to my goals list, I knocked off one when I completed the WDW 1/2 marathon, and last weekend, I knocked another goal off my list.  Meet Alicia, Allie for short:


She is such a sweetie, and she and I are settling into a routine.  I HATED leaving her on Monday when I went to work, but I knew she'd be fine.  It was the human who had separation anxiety.  But she did very well and now she's spending much more time running around my entire apartment and not just spending time in my bedroom.  I even got her a cat condo and she took to it immediately.
