Yurbuds Review

I have always been a headphones person.  I used headphones with my walkman, discman, MP3 player, and now my iPods.  I never liked earbuds because they wouldn't stay in my ears, and when they were in my ears, the music sounded really tinny.  I swore off earbuds because they were a waste of money.  Then I heard about Yurbuds.

They claim to stay in your ears, but I was still skeptical and waited a couple years to actually get a pair.  I got that pair last Sunday, when I picked up an Icy Blue pair of their line for women.  I had been set on pink or purple, but the icy blue is really pretty.  Most of the price was covered by an Apple gift card I received for recycling my old Mac through Apple's program.  They'll put the remaining value of the machine on a gift card, and I used mine to get an armband for my iPhone/iPod and the headphones.

What I like about these is that the earbud part itself doesn't go in the ears, it's the silicone cover instead.  It's much more flexible to adjust to my ears, and that also means the sound quality is much better.  I can even have the volume way down because I'm not fighting the quality, and at the same time, I can hear a lot of things going on around me.

Question though for those who already have Yurbuds: I figured out what the clip is for, but what is the best way to clip the string so the volume consul doesn't bounce around?  When it bounces, it pulls on the earbud itself, making me worry the buds will fall out.

Random Sunday Musings 7/28

I seem to have a slight setback with my IT band.  I don't think it's bad, but I skipped my Tuesday workout last week, and the next morning my IT band was sore.  I don't know what I did, but it was only sore so hopefully it'll bounce back to how it was feeling before last week.  I bought more KT tape yesterday so I can stay on top of this.

I did 1.5 miles yesterday, so I'm slowly but surely building my base, and my goal is to be able to do 3 miles at some point in September.  My training starts late that month, so if I can do a 5k by then, I'll be on my way.

Beating the Heat

I'm not ashamed to admit there are times when the heat in Texas is just too much.  I'm not on any training schedule this summer, so I can skip the gym on days when the forecast show this:

I melt in the heat.  I almost got heat exhaustion in Florida when I was 10.  My ancestors come from northern Europe and very northern Europe.  Even if I'm on the treadmill, I can absolutely feel when it's this hot outside.  If I skip the gym, I try to make up for it and follow a DVD yoga set, but in the summer, I just want to put my feet up and relax, with the AC going and the ceiling fan on.

The other drawback of this heat is I don't want to train for Fall races.  I keep thinking about diving in to the frenzy that is registering for the Disneyland Half, but that means I'd have to do a 10-mile run in August.  That 10-mile run would be on the treadmill.  I've done it before, but I'd rather not.  Part of me, at this moment, is screaming "go for it!", to do the DL half next year.  The bling is sweet, and so is the Coast to Coast.

Decisions, decisions, and they're driving me crazy.

I hit 5,000 views over the weekend!  To honor that, this post will be about the 5k distance.  I started this whole, crazy journey with a 5k at Disney and have been hooked ever since.  That being said, I find the 5k to be a rather interesting distance.  It's 3.1 miles, yet whenever I'm doing a 5k, the distance between miles 2 and 3 seems unbearable... but it's only 3.1 miles!  Why does my mind do this to me?

I have done Mickey's Inaugural 5k, a Halloween 5k and a Thanksgiving 5k.  A 5k at Disney, a Halloween one when I dressed up a little bit, and the other I ran with my mom.  I feel like they are short enough to have fun with, yet sometimes I need more of a challenge (hello 10k!).

I have heard about the more interactive 5k challenges, from the Zombie runs to the color runs, but haven't entered one of those races yet.  What do y'all think about 5k's?  Traditional 5k's or obstacle course-type 5k's?

Random Sunday Musings 7/21

I actually did some yoga this weekend!  I just wasn't feeling it Saturday morning, I didn't want to pop out of bed, down breakfast, and get a run in.  I wanted to take it slower than that, so I stayed in bed until around 7:30, and put in my yoga stretching DVD and did the AM Yoga before breakfast.

Some of the stretches do target the buns so I got some extra stretching in for my IT Band.  Of course I do my regular stretching routine daily, but some extra stretching did feel good.  It had been a while since I did yoga, and it did feel good.  Now that I'm starting to build up running again, I need to do yoga more often.

Training Plans

Now that it's time to test out my IT band and see where I am before Disney training begins, I've been looking at training plans and I've decided to mesh a couple.  I discovered the painful way that I need more than 13 weeks of training for a half so I created a 16-week plan myself kind of using the one I had used as a base, but pushing the first "long run" to Sept. 28.  Throw in the same days I've used since I started for strength training and some Hal Hidgon speed work, I think I've got a good combo.  What also helps extend the training period is three weekends I won't be training.  Rest days are just as crucial.

The build up will be:
3 miles
4 miles
Rest
4 miles
5 miles

Rest
7 miles

8 miles
6 miles
10 miles

Summer Staples

After reading this article, I started thinking about my absolute summer staples.  There are foods I will only eat during the summer, and I have no idea why.  Here are mine, what are yours?

Watermelon

Strawberry Ice Cream

Pink Lemonade

Random Sunday Musings 7/14

Happy Bastille Day!  Last week I did 1 mile and leg weights, core work, and then biking for 20 minutes on three consecutive days.  Yesterday I did another mile and I'm feeling so much better now that I'm starting to see where my IT band is.  I'm trying not to over do it, but I've got to test it out.

Has anyone been watching the ESPNW's Nine for IX documentaries?  There's been 2 so far, one on Venus Williams and her campaign for equal pay at Wimbledon, and the other has been on Pat Summitt.  The one I'm waiting for is "The '99ers" on Aug. 20th.  That one is about the 1999 US women's soccer team when they won the women's world cup.

Disney Legends 2013

The Disney Legends list has been released for this year, and the two that top the list for me are Glen Keane and Ed Wynn.  It's no secret I'm an avid Disney fan, so it's interesting for me to read the Legends list every year.

Ed Wynn wasn't always tied to Disney, but I know him best as the Mad Hatter and Uncle Albert in Mary Poppins.

Glen Keane of course is Glen Keane.  Being born in 1985, I grew up with his characters.  He animated Professor Ratigan, Ariel, the Beast, was the executive producer on Tangled, and of course animated many other characters.

All pictures are courtesy of the Walt Disney Studios.

Fittingly, since Monster's University was just released, Billy Crystal and John Goodman will also be honored.  If anyone wants to see a full list of who's already been named a Disney Legend, the list can be found here.

I do hope some of the other big time animators like Andreas Deja will follow in Keane's footsteps and be honored themselves.  And shockingly, John Lasseter's not on the list yet.
