Random Sunday Musings 3/31

Happy Easter!  Yesterday I did 10 miles and my IT band held up rather well.  It did twinge at times on the second half of my run, but overall it didn't bother me.

It was really humid while I was running since we had thunder storms pass through during the night.  I slept through them, as usual, but knew the humidity was in the forecast.  I tried the caffeine Sports Beans and I'm not sure I like the flavor.  The beans themselves were cherry-flavored, and I normally love cherry-flavored stuff, but these were just OK.  I'll stick with fruit punch.

Even though I had a recovery shake and lunch after the run, my appetite spiked during the day, and at the FC Dallas watching party, I inhaled this entire plate of pasta, chicken, and garlic bread.

After the game, I went home to stretch and ice and relax.  ABC Family had Mulan and then the Lion King and watching those was more fun than the Ten Commandments.

Recovery Smoothies

I will admit to not being the healthiest at times when I've been recovering after a long run.  For my first half, I would eat whatever I could to get calories back, but then I discovered smoothies.  I am by no means a veggie person, but I love the fruit smoothies and try to get enough ingredients to help after a long run.

Right now my favorite is getting a Yoplait Greek yogurt smoothie packet from the freezer section, following the instructions on the back, and adding 1 cup of Kefir into the blender as well.  I like the strawberry Kefir, and the two Greek yogurt smoothie flavors are strawberry-banana and mixed berry.  I like both flavors, and I find the strawberry Kefir only adds to the berry flavor.

 I find the blender has enough for two glasses and it's easy for me to drink the smoothie while I'm stretching and icing.

KT Tape

I love KT Tape.  When I have to use it, it works well, and I don't miss having to wear a brace.  A brace in the middle of a Texas summer is one of the worst things for a runner.  I love the colors the tape comes in, and I love that KT Tape has instructional videos on their website.  The one downside, though, was the tape didn't seem to want to stick.  This was before they created KT Tape Pro, which is supposed to be better and last longer.  When my ITBS flared up again, I decided to give the Pro a try.  It comes in a container, not a box the way their regular tape does, and the tape isn't split down the middle either.

I taped up before my workout last Wednesday, when I decided it was time to test out my knee after three days of resting, icing, stretching and rolling.  I did clean the area with rubbing alcohol because skin oil can mess with the Tape sticking.  It managed the pain for the 35 minutes I was running, and the color combination is fun :)

Between the KT Tape and the calf sleeves, I may need to be held together with super glue.  I thought running was supposed to be healthy.

Random Sunday Musings 3/24

For those on social media, I created a Facebook page for the blog :)  I'd been thinking about it for a little bit, just so I can stop posting links on my personal page.  The page is the same name as the blog, and I'm rather excited that I took this step.  If you're on Facebook, stop on by.  I'll also be posting fun stuff like the playlists I listen to.  I know I've posted those on the blog, but now they can be found in one place and won't have to be dug up.


The internet was all a-twitter this past week over a rumored, and later confirmed, Dopey Challenge at Disney's January marathon weekend.  That challenge will be complete the 5k, the new 10k, half and full, and you will receive 6 medals.  4 for the individual races, one for the Goofy Challenge and one for the Dopey Challenge.  You must register for the Dopey Challenge to be eligible.  Signing up for each race individually will not make you eligible.  For more information, go to the runDisney page.

What makes me excited about the 10k is the medal will be inspired by Minnie Mouse herself!  It is very tempting, but both the 10k and half start at 5:30 in the morning.  This Disney trip is also about vacation, which means sleeping.  I'll have a decision to make when registration opens.


The US is in the process of qualifying for the next world cup.  After losing in Honduras last month, they battled Costa Rica Friday night in Denver.  They survived the Snow Bowl, 1-0, and the next qualifier is in Mexico City on Tuesday.

Another Running Skirt

OK, I'm hooked.  I fell in love with my first running skirt, and I ordered a second one.  I was going to go with straight black, but I saw the argyle skirt and decided to go with that one.  It goes with a number of colors, and it's more fun than the plain black.

I wore it during my 8-mile run on Saturday and it works just as great as my other one.  Now I have to decide which one to wear for Eugene, but it might be this one.  The red skirt with white polka dots reminds me of Minnie Mouse, and what better race to wear it than a Disney race?

Anybody do countdowns for their races?  I have two going on my whiteboard at work, one for Eugene and one for Disney, though I haven't registered for Disney yet.  It's amazing how fast Eugene is approaching, but exciting as well.  Since I knocked off 8 miles Saturday, I have one more long run left.

Curse of the IT Band

I've been unfortunate enough to cross the IT Band god and my issue with my right ITB flared up on Saturday :(  I've been stretching and rolling and icing the knee and heating the hip muscles since Saturday, and I think (maybe) the hip muscles have loosened up a little bit.  I'm not running until tomorrow in hopes that this extra day of not running will help it all the more.  I will be biking, just not running.  I did pick up some KT Tape Pro over the weekend to help out.

Yesterday I took a mental health day and the morning was spent doing car stuff, and on my way home I stopped for some fish at Whole Foods.  There are a couple things I miss about Boston, and that is the seafood.  Thankfully, Whole Foods has a good selection, and I wanted Sole.  There's not much to each piece of Sole, but it's a light, flaky fish when cooked.  I made Sole Meuniere last night, and it was good.  I paired it with a Pinot Grigio and a Texas Grapefruit.

I still have to find a balance between the fish and lemon juice though.  The first time I made it I used too much lemon juice, and last night it wasn't quite enough.  Oh well, I'm learning.  My other favorite fish recipe comes from Giada de Laurentiis.  It's very easy to make, and I use Chilean Sea Bass, also from Whole Foods.  I love seafood and find it's a good change of pace.

Random Sunday Musings 3/17

What's this I hear?  A survey's being sent to certain runDisney participants about a race at Disneyland Paris?  Paris???  OK, DLP is about 20 miles outside of Paris, but still!  Talk about a destination race.

Some exciting news too.  RunDisney sent out an email about important registration dates, and the third bullet point said there will be new medals for the marathon, half marathon, and Goofy's race and a half challenge.

Last but not least, I got back on my training schedule today.  I wasn't sure what to expect since I basically took this past week off.  I ended up doing 8 miles instead of 7 because I didn't hear Runkeeper when I hit 7.  The same happened when I was waiting to hear I had gotten to 5 miles.  So that's 8 miles one week ahead of schedule, and I used a different fuel this week.  I picked up Sports Beans last week, and I LOVE how the packets are re-sealable.  I liked the flavor too.

It feels great to have another brand of fuel I can turn to.  And I might like these more than the Honey Stinger chews.

On a not-so-good-note, my IT Band flared up again.  I forgot about my past ITB issues, and I wasn't stretching and rolling.  Oops.

Disney's Wine and Dine

I don't know how many more races at WDW I want to do after next January, but I do know I want to do the Wine and Dine half.  There's a special place in my heart for this race weekend, even though it has since been moved from its original dates.  I ran my first Disney race, Mickey's Halloween 5k, during that weekend, and it's when I got hooked.  It was so much fun being able to see Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween parade and seeing the Magic Kingdom decked out in Halloween decorations, and then EPCOT with Food and Wine festivities.  Where else can you run a race, get a medal, and take pictures with Disney/Pixar characters?

Wine and Dine is now during the second weekend of November.  I don't know if the weather is any better since you can't predict weather in the south outside of summer - hint, summer's HOT! - but it was moved to coincide with the last weekend of the Food and Wine Festival.  It is at night, with a 10pm start, and finishes with a post-race party in EPCOT.

I know night races can be tricky, especially at Disney.  Runners need to take it easy and get off their feet, but they're at Disney!  It's difficult to do.


This week I have changed things up with training.  My muscles were telling me they were tired so I decided to forgo the training schedule and do an easy workout and give myself some extra rest days.  The next 4 weekends will include long runs, ending with 10 miles on the 4th weekend.

Unhealthy Foods

I must admit, this past weekend was not good for me, food wise.  Friday was Mexican food and Sunday was bar food, and I inhaled a pecan cobbler with a heaping scoop of ice cream.  I didn't think I'd eat the whole thing, but I did.  Sometimes I feel I just have to break out of my health craze and eat like that.  It's good for me.

Speaking of Friday, I still can't get over how cute Finley is from Oz.  I wanted a Finley plush for my office, and sadly the Disney Store in Frisco didn't have any.  They only had the Vinylmation, and I just don't understand those.  I think they're creepy.  Major fail on the Disney Store too.  It's opening weekend and that's all y'all have?  So I ordered one from the online store.
How cute is that!  He'll fit right in with the stuff I have on my window sill.  I have Remy, Paddington Bear, Gonzo, Rizzo and Minnie Mouse.

Random Sunday Musings 3/10

As mentioned yesterday, I switched up some scheduled long runs so I could drop some miles.  I did 4 miles yesterday, so next week will be 7, and after that will be 8, 6, 10, and then I can taper.  I really like the training plan I'm using this time around.  This morning I lifted weights before yoga, and I did two exercises for biceps, two for triceps, one for chest, one for shoulders, one for abs, and one for legs.  I missed that weight machine on Wednesday when I did leg weights, so I made sure I get it today.

In yoga, I found out my back is a bit tight.  the stretches we did had the feel-good kind of pain, but it still left me wincing a little bit.  It seems whenever I do yoga I find another area that I need to focus on, which makes my goal this month of doing more yoga even more important.  I will certainly make sure to do yoga during this summer when I'll be taking a step back between training schedules.

Welcome to the Land of Oz

I decided to switch up this week's and next week's running mileage for two reasons: 1, I'd been building for four straight weeks and thought it was time to drop miles a little bit and 2, I was out with friends Friday night eating Mexican food and seeing Oz: the Great and Powerful, and I wasn't hydrating either.

First, we got 6 trailers by my count: After Earth, Admission, the Sapphires, the Great Gatsby, the Lone Ranger and Iron Man 3.

So, my review of Oz... I thought the best actor was Zach Braff, and he does mostly voice work in the movie as Finley.  The main characters are flat, and Mila Kunis overplayed her part too much once her character went through the transformation.  Finley looks more like the monkeys from the original movie than the flying baboons, but Finley made the movie for me.  He's absolutely adorable and has the best lines (Moooooooooo!).  The CGI sets were beautiful, and the movie does pay homage to the Wizard of Oz - we even get a glimpse at a cowardly creature, could it be a lion ;-)  It was fun, but certainly not the Wizard of Oz.  I would recommend going into the movie with an open mind.  If you do, I think you'll enjoy it.

Running Skirt pt. 2 and Runkeeper

I did my 6 miles Sunday in my running skirt again, and this time I had to use the pockets.  I had my energy chews in one pocket and my car keys in the other.  I never felt them move when I was running, and once I ate my energy chews, I didn't even tell a difference when they were no longer in my pocket.  I can't say enough about the skirt.  I'm definitely getting more.  Next up will be basic black so it can go with everything.

What gadgets do y'all use while running?  Once I decided to retire my four-years-old+ iPod and switch to my iPhone (less items to carry while running), I downloaded the Runkeeper app and so far I'm liking it.  I just use the basic program to enter in my intervals, and I like that it keeps track of all my intervals for an overall pace.  It's how I know for a fact I'm faster outside than on the treadmill.  Like, almost 2-minutes a mile faster than the treadmill.  Even when I try to slow down for an easy run, I go right back to that time frame per mile.  Obviously, that's where my internal pacer is comfortable at.

A Disney Workout

It's been a while since I posted about music.  This time is all about Disney!  There are some pretty good Disney songs for working out.  Whenever a new Disney movie would hit theaters, I'd go see it with family and immediately wanted the soundtrack.  Then I got the older soundtracks.  I've figured out which songs work really well for a run, and the whole concept is just super fun.

Random Sunday Musings 3/3

Happy March!  It was a chilly start to the month in North Texas, and I had a "I'm officially a Texan now" moment yesterday morning.  The temps were in the 30s and the windchill was in the 20s and I decided it was too cold and windy for me to run outside.  I switched my schedule around and did yoga and some Pilates since today's forecast looked infinitely better.  It's at least 10 degrees warmer this morning and I'll be out there in a few hours.  I get to test out the pockets in my running skirt.


Yesterday also marked the opening game to the MLS season and FC Dallas got a 1-0 win over Colorado.  Yay for 3 points!
