2015 in Review

I can't believe the year is almost over, and it'll be 2016.  Wait what?  2015 was certainly interesting, and lots of stuff happened, both running and non-running.  Due to my injury, I didn't have any goals this year except to make progress.  It's hard to set goals when I have no idea what I can do.  I'm happy that I did make progress and knocked off 2 5k's in the fall.

Progress was slow at the beginning of the year, in part I was still focusing on keeping my ITB loose by using the lacrosse ball, but I also didn't want to dive head first into a running program and hurt myself again.  If I had to sum up 2015 running with one word, it'd be patience.  That's not a virtue I possess, but I needed to be patient this year.  I was running between 1-2 miles in the spring, then was able to start building towards 3 when I switched back to Asics.  I didn't have anything against my Brooks, but it didn't feel like that perfect fit I was looking for.

At the same time, I started going to Pure Barre after reading about the classes on Courtney's blog.  I was constantly looking out for new strength training, and in the spring I started thinking about leaving PT.  But before I did that, I needed to find programs I could turn to to fill the void.  I loved Pure Barre at my very first class.  It targets all my weaknesses and I love challenge.  I've done so many different exercises between all the classes, and I can feel myself getting stronger.  Between that and keeping my ITB loose, I hope to continue making progress.

The 5k's brought to light the potential scar tissue I have on a nerve at the base of my ITB, so that's my first goal for 2016.  I'm waiting to start acoustic wave therapy, and I'm working the tender spot with my trusty lacrosse ball.  I'm probably taking a break from running while I'm in Colorado, so January will have some good stuff coming.

Monday Musings 12/21

Another week, and my last day to work for the year!  I'm taking tomorrow off so I can run errands and clean the apartment before I head out for Christmas.  Allie won't like being taken to the vet, but they love her and take good care of her.

You may have noticed I haven't done Friday Fives in a couple weeks.  Fridays have gotten hectic since December hit, and I've usually hit the ground running at work.  I hope things peter out with break and I'm back at it in the new year.  Though we do have changes coming, so I might have to write posts ahead of time.

This weekend was filled with stuff, mostly getting to see Star Wars.  Anybody else get to see it?  I was initially going to wait until Tuesday on my day off, but decided to get a ticket for Saturday instead.  The theater wasn't completely full, but it was almost full.  We cheered when the lights dimmed (after 6 previews.  WTF Cinemark, 6?!), we cheered when the scroll started, and we cheered when all favorite characters first appeared.  It was definitely worth going since everyone there was Star Wars fans.  I even had my Under Armour Star Wars shirt on :-)

And a side note on those previews, only two are maybes, and even then they would be Netflix movies.  Kung Fu Panda 3 and Zootopia.  Zootopia, btw, got the biggest reaction from the crowd, with sloths at the DMV.

I ran before the movie so I didn't have to worry about getting it done after the movie.  I was up at 6:15, without an alarm, so why not?  I felt accomplished before going to the theater.

Sunday was more low key with only Pure Barre.  It was cloudy and humid, and perfect weather for cat snuggling.  Sometimes she asks politely, other times she plops down and hunkers in.  I didn't mind since she wanted to snuggle around my Pure Barre class.

3 Times a Lady

3 Things Thursday, and I'll include this with Running With Spoons.  Thursday seems to be the random posting day.

1) I'm so ready for Christmas break.  I'm getting cranky at work, and I'm focused on break coming up.  I'm trying so hard not to get sick this year, but I woke up feeling a little stuffy, so I'm pounding Airborne.  Even when I have a cold, I feel Airborne helps.  Doesn't do anything to prevent it once I have a cold, but I feel like the extra vitamin C packs a punch against the head cold.

2) When the cat asks politely, you snuggle.  Period.  She wanted to snuggle last night, and put her paw on my arm and started headbutting my side.  I aquiesced.

3)  The holiday cards are going to be even more late this year.  Even though I ordered with enough time before the order deadline to have the cards here by tomorrow, the tracking number is showing delivery on Tuesday.  That means I'll need to scramble to get them all out either that night or Wednesday morning before I head to the airport.  Duly noted, and I hope to be on top of everything next holiday season.

That DNS

Today's Tuesday on the Run is the dreaded DNS or DNF.  Long time readers will know, I had a dreaded DNS back in 2013.  I'd signed up for a 10k that took place about 1.5 months after the Eugene half marathon, and I'd signed up for it before my leg blew up during the last 5k of Eugene.  That March was when I got hit with ITBS, but I was able to train through it and arrive at the starting line in Eugene.  My 10-mile training run went pretty well, and recovery was good too.  But the last 5k destroyed my leg and set me on a path of recovery that I'm still on the comeback trail.

The 10k was part of a half marathon and 10k series, benefiting Wound Warrior.  As my leg was not healing after my half, I had to make the difficult decision to not run.  I didn't even pick up my packet.  I did go to cheer on runners since my cousin and her husband were both running it.  I figured if I couldn't run it with them, I could support them.  I got up early that day and drove down to Irving, where the races were delayed more than hour because we had quite the thunder storm hit right before they were going to start.

Thankfully I found some shelter, but it was still outside since no buildings were open, and it was cold.  This wasn't a warm June thunderstorm.  The front came through before the storm and temps dropped.  I stayed through the whole thing, from storms and delays to runners actually starting, and meeting my friends at the finish line.  I was still so frustrated that I had to DNS, and I haven't been able to try the 10k again.  One day, I'm determined to start and complete it.

Monday Musings 12/14

What a busy week!  We are now steam rolling towards Christmas, and I almost have all the gifts wrapped up.  I only have two more, and those are types that can be taken care of this week, or right before Christmas.  All I need is my Christmas cards to send out, and I'll be done.  It sure feels good.

As posted on Thursday, my tree is up and decorated in my office.  I like this tree compared to my last tree the past few years.  I needed a fuller tree because I've collected a lot of ornaments over the years, so I went to Home Depot.  They need to put handles on those boxes.  The box wasn't heavy, but it's bulky, and getting it to my car was interesting, but not as interesting as getting it from my car to my office building.  The front of the building is cut off due to construction, so I had to carry the box from the parking garage to the building.  Not easy.

Monday was my medical massage and scar tissue diagnosis.  I'm going to start acoustic wave therapy when I get back from Christmas, and I hope it helps.  I'm still working on that spot with my lacrosse ball, but if it is scar tissue, I'm going to need help to break it up.  My chiro said he'd do the therapy on my entire leg, to break up the existing scar tissue, and to make sure other spots don't acquire scar tissue.

Saturday was a lazy day after Pure Barre.  I ran some errands, then put my feet up for the rest of the day.  I needed to nap because I'd been out Friday night for a holiday party (which was a lot of fun), and I watched Army/Navy, then the Santa Clause.  I have family who've served in both the army and navy, so I was pulling for both teams.  After the game and movie, I felt like baking, and made snickerdoodles.

Finally, I took an extra rest day on Sunday because I did Pure Barre on Saturday, and I woke up yesterday with two strategically placed knots in my glutes.  I'm trying to work on relaxing during my runs, and making sure my muscles stay relaxed too.  Those knots would not have been good for a relaxing run.  So I stayed home for some extra foam rolling, while watching the Dallas Marathon.  The race was having a fun Duo to Rio relay with elites, where the men ran the first half and the women ran the second half.

Random Thursday

Random Thursday!  I've had a few thoughts this week, so I'm up for Amanda's  Thinking Out Loud.

I've made some really good progress with buying Christmas gifts (and having vendors ship them out), but I fell behind on Christmas cards.  I finally ordered them yesterday, from the American Humane Association, and I should have them in time to mail them out.  I just need stamps.  Yup, I'm ahead in one area, and behind in another.  If anyone needs card ideas, I do recommend the AHA.  They've got great card designs, and purchases benefit the AHA's work.


There's nothing like a massage to get you to relax.  And a relaxing massage is nothing like what I experienced at my first medical massage on Monday.  My chiro's office offers medical massages for its patients, and I decided to book an appointment for my calves.  I've had tight calves in the past, and I've had knots and tight Achilles this fall as well.

I can't say it was enjoyable, but this is exactly what I needed and was looking for.  He found knots I didn't even know I had, and those knots hurt when he was working through them.  It was one of those times of forcing myself to relax so he could work through the knots, but it hurt!  Obviously my calves needed this, but I have bruises!  Even after wearing compression sleeves to try to help the blood flow, I still have bruises.


Monday I put my tree up at work, and I brought the ornaments in on Tuesday.  I have a good variety between Disney ornaments, homemade ornaments, ornaments from trips.  I love them all, and I couldn't use a lot of them last year with Allie.  If the ornaments break, I can't replace them.  I even have ornaments from Russia so those would take a lot to replace.


'Tis the season now for parties.  I have two Friday, one for my office, and one at my cousin's.  And next week is one for my department, and one for my group.  4 in total.  Guess what I'm doing bright and early Saturday morning?  Pure Barre.  Let's see how well that goes.

Race Expos

Today's link-up is race expos.  It's been a while since I actually stayed at an expo after picking up my bib.  The last major expo at Disney, I had my parents pick up my bib since they were going the day before I was flying in.  This was still when runDisney let runners pick up other runners' bibs, and there was no sense in us going twice if they were already going.  I didn't want anything at the expo and wouldn't have wanted to shop.  More time in the parks for me.

I find expos can be hit or miss.  Disney certainly puts on big expos, but after going to a couple, there's nothing special in it, for me.  I find a lot of the same vendors are there, so if they don't interest me, no thanks.  Other expos are pretty small, which surprises me given the size of some races.  It all depends on the organizers.  A lot of times, vendors I'd like to see aren't at expos, so I stick to online shopping if I want something specific.


On a random note, has anyone done Acoustic Wave Therapy?  I found out the new trouble spot is actually an extension of the ITB, and the pain is from build up of scar tissue.  My chiro said AWT can break up the scar tissue much much faster than any manual technique.

Monday Musings 12/7

It's beginning to look more like Christmas.  I finally bought a tree this weekend and put it together in my office.  I have no place for it, and Allie brought the tree down last year.  No Disney ornaments, no breakable ornaments, and no sentimental ornaments went on the tree last year.  Now, I can bring in all my ornaments and decorate the tree before work tomorrow.  I wasn't kidding when I said I'd have a tree in my office instead of at home.  I still decorated at home, but the tree is safe and sound.

The weekend was a mix between good workouts, down time, and being busy.  Today is a friend's birthday so a group of us went out for Tex Mex Saturday at Chuy's, then played dominos and had sopapilla cheesecake.  I didn't get home until after midnight, and my mind wouldn't shut off for me to go to sleep until past one, and yet my body decided that 7am was the perfect time to be up and at 'em.  Ugh!  Pure Barre wasn't until 11:45, so why couldn't my body let me sleep in.

I also ticked off two more Christmas movies from my list: Love Actually and Elf.  Anybody live near a Cinemark?  Their classic series is showing Miracle on 34th Street on the 20th if anyone is interested.  That movie is on my Netflix list but I may not get it in time.

Bucket List Vacations

Friday Five is bucket list vacations.

I love to travel, and have traveled in the past with my parents.  I love it, but sadly work takes most of my time now.  That darn work.  Some bucket list destinations are new, but I'd like to repeat some, to go back and explore more or go back since I understand more.

1) Spain.  Brand new.  I'd love to go to Spain and eat and drink wine throughout the country.  I did that in Italy and it was fantastic!  It's fun to try new foods when you're in a country that's known for food.  I'd like to go to Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, maybe the Alhambra.  I've thought this one out.

2) Scotland.  Kind of a repeat.  My parents and I were in Edinburgh when I was 16, but I'd also like to throw in Glasgow, some castle tours, highland tours.  Do a big tour of the whole country.  And avoid the haggis.

3) The Smithsonian Institute.  This is one to go back since I know a lot more.  When you're a kid, you look for kid things.  I recognized the Ruby Slippers right away, but a lot of other artifacts went right over my head.  I want to see specifically the American History building.  I know they're got way more stuff than they can display, but I'd like to "get lost" for a day.

4) Napa.  We went to 10 wineries in Napa this year and didn't even scratch the surface.  I'm currently coming up with a list of wineries for my next trip, whenever that may be.

5) Mediterranean.  This would have to be a cruise because there's so much to see.  My cousins have been on some good cruises that cover the Mediterranean in Spain, France, Italy, Greece, and Turkey.  Cruises are great because you can go to sleep and wake up in the next port :-)

3 Things Thursday 12/3

A little late today, but that's what happens when I don't have a post ready to go, and work takes over right when I was in my office.  Now that things have calmed down a little bit, I'm ready to write.

1) I'm slowly making my way through Christmas movies, with the help of Netflix.  I should buy some movies to add to the collection I have at home, but I haven't gotten my rear in gear.  I watched Trading Places yesterday, and yes, I partly consider it a Christmas movie.  It starts before Thanksgiving and goes through the new year.

2) I've decided to join a challenge of sorts.  Kinetic Revolution is posting daily strength training exercises on Instagram, and I plan to do days 1-3 today.  I'm not breaking my schedule to include these, so I'm grouping them together to have a full strength training day.  So far there are six, and I'll finish that with planks (no for real, I will).  I'm always looking out for new/more exercises to do.

3) It may be moving into late fall in Dallas, and the temps actually reflect this, but I'm still wearing open-toed shoes.  I have closed-toed shoes, but the toe box is very narrow and it's making my toes cramp.  I need to stretch them out on the lacrosse ball each night to keep them from cramping.  I'm on the lookout for dress shoes that aren't so narrow, but those kinds of heels aren't easy to find.  You know you're a runner when...

TOTR: TMI Stories

No, I won't tell any of my personal stories, but we as runners all have stories of TMI issues either before races or during races.  The running tip of finding a breakfast that works for you comes from experience.  There's nothing worse than trying a brand new to you breakfast on race morning, only to have it backfire at some point during the race.

No, my write up is an ode to Band Aids, thanks to a meme Brooks posted the day before Thanksgiving.  It made me lol.

OK, since I can wear sports bras, I've never had this issue, but it's running humor, and I love it.
