Marathon Weekend, Fun in the Parks Day 5

Day 5 was my last full day at WDW.  We started the day with a WISH breakfast meet up, then my parents and I headed over to Fantasia Gardens to play some mini golf.  If any of y'all are looking for a fun course at Disney, this is it.  The Gardens side is the fun mini golf, based on the original Fantasia, and the fairways is modeled on actual golf courses.  The Gardens side is much more fun.

Lunch was in EPCOT, where we got gyros from Morocco.  I got the sauce on the side so the pita pocket and chicken weren't drowning and I could chose if I wanted the sauce or not.  This time I didn't.  We made our way to Norway to ride the Maelstrom, look at the Frozen art again, and I also decided to skip meeting Anna and Elsa.  The line was ridiculous :(  They weren't on the course either so I didn't get to meet them this time around.  I did get a Mickey ice cream bar before we did the Three Caballeros ride one more time.  Then it was over to France for another Grand Marnier slushie and a viewing of the film.

Dinner was at Universal Studios, at Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville Cafe.  I hadn't been to this restaurant in a long time and it was good to be back.  I am a parrothead and I indulged in a Don't Stop the Carnival (strawberry, banana, mango and rum) with the coconut shrimp and french fries.

We headed back to the hotel, and I definitely did not want to leave WDW.  It was time to go back home but I was going to mope the entire next day at the airport :(

Marathon Weekend, Fun in the Parks Day 4

Day 4 was a different strategy.  My dad and Godfather were doing the marathon, and one of my cousins had to go back home to get ready for her spring semester.  But that's OK, because in August, I made reservations for myself, my cousin, my mom and my Godmother to get pedicures at Saratoga Springs.  My cousin's husband came too, but he didn't opt for any of the spa treatments.  He was a very good sport.  I got the idea after reading Heather's review of Senses and thought it'd be nice since I put my feet through the ringer with each round of training.

I went with a color I don't normally go for when getting a pedicure.  I usually stick with pinks or reds, but I was still thinking Frozen, so I was looking for a blue that would go with that theme, but that be a Cinderella blue.  Luckily, they had one!  We were also told the nail polish itself is vegan (not like I'd eat it...) so it would take about 3 coats of polish to complete the pedicure.

After the pedicure, we went into EPCOT and got fast passes, including one for Soarin', while my dad and Godfather got ready for the parks after completing the full.  We went to the American Adventure before heading towards the other part of EPCOT to enjoy our fast passes.  Some of the party did Mission to Mars (I did not) and Spaceship Earth, but I did participate in Nemo and Turtle Talk.  Before heading to Soarin' for that fastpass, we had dinner at Le Cellier.  This was my first time eating there, and I really liked it.  I love steak and went with their cheddar cheese soup and pepper steak.  The soup had a bit of a kick to it that I wasn't expecting, and I couldn't eat all of it, and the pepper steak was perfect.

After Le Cellier and Soarin', we headed back to the World Showcase to get ready for Illuminations.  Illuminations is mixed for me.  I don't like the big globe and slow parts, but of course I like the fireworks and the fire.

The park closed and we all headed back to the hotel.  I was out like a light again, and I really don't know how the Dopey runners coped with the early wake up calls and multiple races.  I did one race and was exhausted every night.

Random Sunday Musings

Back to random musings :-)

I saw my therapist this past week, and since I'm taking some time off from training, I don't have to make more appointments until I start training again.  I honestly don't know when that will be, but I do know I have to keep testing this leg to see what the progress is.  After completing the strengthening plan I'm on, I'll start the transition to zero drop shoes, which does require low mileage to get used to the difference.  I have my Newtons and I also want to check out the Altras and see how they fit before I take the plunge with those.

I did start doing some exercise this week, but it was core work on Monday and nothing else afterwards.  I felt like I needed to do something on Monday but I didn't want to do leg work just a week after my half marathon.  I've also been hit with the munchies.  These didn't hit me until after the race, and mostly I've been going through M&M's.  Anybody else experience this after races?  I don't remember getting the munchies after my last half marathons.

Marathon Weekend, Fun in the Parks Day 3

Saturday, obviously, was the half, and after taking my time to get more icing and stretching done at the hotel, I headed over to MGM to meet up with my party after I stayed behind to complete said icing and stretching.  I was lucky this race since my knee never gave me shooting pain, but I wrapped an ace bandage over the Rock Tape to give my knee extra support, and slowly caught the boat over.

Lunch consisted of a chocolate croissant from Ruth's and then pizza from Pizza Planet.  My dad, Godparents and cousin went over to MGM when the park opened, and got us all fast passes for Star Tours, the Great Movie Ride and Rock n Roller Coaster, all when us 4 half marathoners were still on the course.  This was my first time doing Star Tours after the renovation, and I kind of like the old style better.  They incorporated stuff from the more recent movies, and I'm not a fan of those.  I'm a Star Wars purist - Han shot first!

We had a bit of time between the fast passes so after Star Tours we went to the Lights, Motor Action! where I recognized Dennis Marsico, formerly of runDisney TV.  I also got to sit down at this show, which was great because afterwards, I felt my knee had loosened up a lot more.  Enough time had passed during the show that we could use the fast passes for the Great Movie Ride, another attraction I could sit for a good period of time, then on to Rock n Roller Coaster.  I love this ride, and I wish they had one at Disneyland.  My parents and I left MGM after that to head to a pizza party with friends, some of whom were doing the full the next day.

My mom and I also decided to enjoy the hot tub after dinner.  I know it all depends on who you talk to, but I feel the hot tub does more for my muscles after a race than an ice bath.  I was doing pretty well considering I'd been up since 1am and had no nap, but as soon as I settled into bed to watch some TV/look at my phone, I was out.  And I mean out!

Marathon Weekend, Fun in the Parks Day 1 and 2

I talked about the race, now it's time to talk about the fun.  I landed in Orlando around 11am and headed to the Magical Express with a quick stop at Quizno's along the way.  This was my first time riding ME, and per usual Disney, I had to wait in line to get on a bus.  But I got to the Boardwalk just fine and met up with my parents.  After their lunch, we headed to EPCOT where I bought my park pass, and I finally, after being owed one for a couple years, I got a Grand Marnier slushie.  These things are SO good!

We didn't do too much in EPCOT, but after my dad left to meet up with more people in our party, my mom and I headed to Norway so I could check out the Frozen museum display they currently have.  They had a number of traditional Scandinavian costumes on display, as well as pottery and carvings, and pictures the artists took during their research trip for the movie.  It was really fun looking at everything since that is part my ancestry.  The rest of the day was doing the Three Caballeros ride in Mexico, and heading back to the Boardwalk for some rest, food, going to Jellyrolls, and bed.  I'm surprised I lasted as long as I did because I woke up at 4am to get to the airport.

Friday, all 8 of us went to the Magic Kingdom and got there just after rope drop.  I met Mayor Weaver for the first time ever, and after going to Buzz Lightyear, Space Mountain, Monster's Inc and the Tea Cups, we went over to the New Fantasyland.  I know WDW has a lot of land, but this expansion is massive.  There's so much more room, and it'll look even better when the Dwarves' Mine Ride is done and the scaffolding is gone.  We did Ariel's Undersea Adventure, Dumbo and the Haunted Mansion before having lunch at Pecos Bill's Cafe, and I skipped Pirates so I could get a Dole Whip - no picture because it didn't last long.  The last attraction I did was the Tiki Room.

After that, my parents and I went back to the resort to get off our feet, went to the WISH meet, and we did take out from the Macaroni Grill for dinner.

Thoughts on the 2014 WDW Half Marathon

Thursday had my recap, and here are my thoughts.

* I did not miss going to the expo.  My parents got all my stuff so I could spend more time in the parks, and in my opinion, between the official merchandise, the D&B bags and the New Balance shoes, rD has created a two (three?)-headed monster it can't control

* I LOVE the long-sleeve shirt.   The last long-sleeve shirt I got from a race I used as a throwaway in Oregon because the material was awful and the neck line kept digging into my neck

* Seriously, the lack of characters makes me grumpy.  This is the biggest rD weekend with the marathon, but the lack of characters and entertainment shocks me.  It's been good in the past so I don't know what happened this year.  I could've seriously used a pick me up before mile 10

* I will stay away from rD events at WDW for a while.  The fields are growing, yet the course capacity remains the same.  The congestion was constant, despite the smaller corrals.  I think it's time Disney offered two different legs of the half to try to deal with this issue

* I have no idea when my next race will be, which is weird.  Ever since I started this journey, I knew what races I wanted to do, even if registration hadn't opened yet

* There is nothing, and I mean nothing, in the way of running on my calendar this year.  I'll still be posting, but I'm taking a detour this year with new strengthening programs

2014 WDW Half Marathon

This race was sheer willpower and stubbornness.  I'm too stubborn for my own good, and when I pay what I did for this half, plus airfare, I was going to do it, no matter what.  I am happy I decided to walk the race prior to race day since it was really humid race morning.  I was concerned for the half when I woke up Friday morning and it was beyond humid for the 10k.  I really don't know how people did the 10k, it was that awful!  The saving grace about Dallas is we may have heat, but we don't have that many humid days.

I woke up at 1 when my alarm was set for 3.  Go figure.  We walked right onto a bus and on arrival, quickly moved over to wait to walk to the corrals.  The corrals are definitely smaller now, and it was interesting to see how small they've gotten.  I don't feel like we were waiting that long before the wheelchairs went off, but during the downtime I was looking out for people I'd recognize.  Sadly, I didn't see anyone.  Each corral got fireworks and Disney music when they were set off, and my corral, I, got music from Brave.  I approve :-)

The characters were good along the first half of the course, and I remember seeing:

Capt. Jack Sparrow and Capt. Barbossa
Darkwing Duck and Launchpad
Jack and Sally
Buzz Lightyear
the Queen of Hearts
Royal Daisy Duck
Cinderella and Prince Charming

After that, I was disappointed with the lack of characters on the back half.  I remember there were more characters along this part during the Princess.  I saw

two reindeer
Lilo and Stitch
Golf Goofy
and Sarge

before entering EPCOT, where I saw Phineas and Ferb.  I really did feel the lack of characters and wish Disney had included more.  During the Princess, Lilo and Stitch, the golf characters and Sarge were there, but there was also Belle, singing footmen, Pocahontas and Mulan before you reached EPCOT.

I slugged my way across the finish line after high-fiving Goofy, and I needed ice.  My knee held up rather well until mile 12, but there were other pains going on.  My feet hurt, then my right glute hurt, followed by my lower back, and I had sausage fingers for most of the race.  That was a first.  But I finished!

Race Week!

This week's the week!  I haven't done much since my 2 miles on Saturday, but I did wrap up phase 1 of the Strong Curves workout, which means after some R&R, I can move on to phase 2.  My costume's ready, even though my black calf sleeves aren't in this picture.  I'll be on corral I so if y'all see me, please say hi :-)

2014 Goals

How was everyone's NYE?  I had a massive headache, and I took a Tylenol and went to bed at 8:30.  It seemed to work since I woke up with no headache.

I don't do resolutions because not only does it seem like I've been doing something wrong, they just don't last.  They don't make it past January, so I say goals to have something to focus on and achieve over time.  I like the sound of that much better.

Goal #1: finish the WDW half.  This is obviously a short term goal since it's in two weekend's time.

Goal #2: conquer my ITBS.  This is the long term goal because there's a lot to do in order to accomplish this.

Goal #3: and a non-running goal - welcome two feline friends in to my household.  I still have to do some kitten proofing, but my home is ready to be a forever home.  I just need to decide which shelter to contact and talk to them.
